Depends. In a case where a juvenile commits a crime with a gun that their parents gave them, or one that was left in a place that the child had access to, the parent is responsible.

In the event that the juvenile gets drunk and drives in their parents' car, or that the parents know the child is drinking, the parent is responsible.

But if the child gets a knife and goes and holds up a store, the parent is not responsible. It has to do with whether or not the parent played any part in the items used in the crime. If they did, they are responsible.

Parents are responsible for everything their children do until they are 18 years old...as far as who should do the time....certainly would depend on the crime, but i believe that any child past the age of 10 should know the difference between right and wrong and should have to pay the consequences for their wrong doing.

An old issue of mine. I do believe parents should be held responsible for the crimes of minor children. After all, isn't it the responsibility of the parents to teach their children properly? Isn't it the parent's duty to provide a set of values and positive role model? I do believe that a child over 14 or 15 is beyond the point (unless properly raised) where the parents have much influence. A properly raised child will even after 14 or 15 listen and frequently take the advice or guidance of a parent.
I do believe that criminal activity by a child under 14 or 15 is the absolute responsibility of the parent. The parent should be punished.

In my opinion best answer to your questions centers on accountability and young learning natural and logical consequences for actions, and what to do about caretaker of young people who don't give a sh*t.
You need to take into account severity of action you call crime. The intent of the child considering age AND number of times problem behavior was repeated.
When young person knowinly commits sever crime number of times; it would be very interesting to have something in place where both child and parent served some time together. Wonder if the market for such a product would make it interesting investment.

Terrible idea. Parents can raise 2 siblings that turn out entirely different. How would you draw the line? People would have no children if this were the case. One child grows up to be president, one child robs a store. The parents go to jail?

No. The age of reason is around seven years of age. How are children going to learn that there are consequences to their actions if their parents are serving the time?
