I have never looked on the other side of grass as I am happy with the grass on my side however know to many people that have followed the grass and lived to regret it.
I think not knowing what you have until it is gone is true but I have always appreciated what I have and who is in my life.
A lot of it is down to being possitive about who and what you are there is no need to go over to other side if happy with what you have and if you are happy and appreciate what you have now then no regrets or guilt when not there.
I lost my daughter and I always loved and appreciated her for who she was and although not with us now we have no guilt as we did everything we could and more we know what we had in her and appreciated it every single day.

I see a common thing in general. People will agree that it always seems greener on the other side- sort of resigning to not count their blessings and cultivate the good and average or whatever fields they have. Another thing is that green, healthy grass doesn't stay or get that way by accident. It takes care to learn about how to take care of it, time, dedication, fertilizer, etc. Those who put work into the things they have and the relationships they have will reap the results of the green, healthy grass. In cultivating your crops/grass/field, you not only make the best of it but the effort and conscientious attention reminds you of what is important to you so you don't selfishly try to claim all that isn't yours.
The 2nd part of the question is a matter of what is in a person's heart. If you are ungrateful, covetous, and wallow in self-pity when things go wrong, you will likely have the grass-is-greener syndrome all your life. If you love, tend, and cultivate the grass you have removing harmful weeds, doing research now and then, and watering, etc, then what you have will please you and be a source of pride. The dry and barren harvests will be easier to take because next year will be better, and you know you are doing your best.

The grass is always greener because some are simply not satisfied with their current status in life. However, appearances can be deceiving. Though the grass may look greener, what it is composed of may not be much different than the grass one is currently stepping on. Thus, if one has second thoughts, it would be wise to stay in familiar pastures until one is truly ready to venture out into a different field.
Some people tend to take their possessions and their closest family/friends for granted. It is thus, assumed that they do little or nothing to maintain these relationships (along with their prized possessions), and when those relationships deteriorate, these people will later regret their inaction and come to know the true worth when what they had is no longer there.

The grass is NEVER greener... it just seems that way when "your" grass doesn't seem very green.
I certainly DO know what I have got.... and don't need it to be gone before I realise what it is.... Sometimes you don't appreciate the little things as much as you should. Things like health are taken for granted, until you become unwell. Then it puts the other things into perspective. There isn't a lot that really REALLY matters apart from your health, and that of your family and friends; because with out good health you have nothing. All the wealth and money in the world doesn't buy you good health.

I feel like no matter what, the grass is always going to seem greener on the other side, because people dont realise what they have. I am deployed right now and its my first time away from my husband. I didnt realise how much I really do need him until I came here. We would fight all the time and now I realise it was always about stupid things, and it wasnt worth it. It seems that most people want to be anything but themselves, so things always seem better when someone else has it. We should all just be happy with who we are, because really we are the ones who control who we become.

My Interpretation - Mika " This is not about emotion, I don't need a reason not to care what you say, or what happens in the end" Bliss - Muse "Everything about you is how I'd wanna be. Your freedom comes naturally. Everything about you resonates happiness. Now I won't settle for less" Paparazzi - Lady Gaga "I'll follow you until you love me"..."Promise I'll be kind, but I won't stop until that boy is mine. Baby you'll be famous, chase you down until you love me" I'm not dead - Pink "I was never looking for approval from anyone but you, and though this journey is over I'd go back if you asked me to" Chasing pavements - Adele " This ain't lust, I know this is love. But if I tell the world, I'll never say enough 'coz it was not said to you, and that's exactly what I need to do" There are so many! I also love 'Forever and ever' by Demis Roussos, 'Signal Fire' by Snow Patrol and all the lyrics of 'Invincible' by Muse are beautiful.

Part of growing older and gaining experience is finding out that the greener grass on the other side of the fence is almost always a result of somebody painting their dead grass with green paint. While your grass may have been a dull green, at least it was real.

you think the grass is greener until you give everything up to go to greener grass then a couple of years down the line you are in the same or a worse rut than you were in to begin with

It is perception, some people who look at a glass half filled with water. Some people will say, it is half empty (Negative attitude) and for some it is half filled (Positive Attitude)
One always feels, their own life is very complicated, compared to others, until they step into their shoes and find out, hey you know what, we were better fit in our own shoes.
So live life with its best on your home ground, then being worried about how is the next door doing.
