That is a great question - The smell of rain has always reminded me of the smell from a wet dog, but i do love the sound of rain and how it is so similar to the sound of bacon cooking on a Sunday morning. My answer may be kinda stupid but my favorite smell is pretty much no smell - where we live it is the beginning of the cold weather and the smell (or non smell) i am referring to is that crisp, clean, cool first inhale when you walk outside into the bright clear day. There is nothing distinguishing about it - it is just clean and pure and fresh. It makes you want to take a second inhale that is even deeper. It is refreshing and almost makes you want to jump around like a kid. Other than that two favorite smells are Chinese restaurant (from the outside - inside the smell just turns to a grease smell), and Hypnotic Poison perfume.

I like the smell of fresh-baked bread. It is almost guaranteed to make me want to buy a loaf and run home and eat a big chunk of it with butter and cheese.
Coffee is another good smell, and I also very much like such nature smells as rain on the grass, freshly turned farm soil and blossoms of various sorts.
(If you look anything like your avatar I'd be happy to shave and put on fresh aftershave for you--even though I almost never use aftershave.)

i think the best smell rain related is the one you get after a hot day at the countryside, after all that dust is cooked by sun, a cold summer rain on that cooked dust for me is the smell of childhood. of course there are other smells, can't really tell right now....that of fresly cut grass...also very strong. i guess the sea smell - kinda stinky sometimes, i didn't grew up there....
p.s - more of a conclusion - i think the best smells, images, sounds (sounf of rain, thunder) that you love, like come from your childhood years, the best years. ones of inocence and careless, just plain full fun.
i was lucky i had like 30 kids to play with every summer. ;)

I like both of yours, but I would add the smell of rain on fresh soil, the smell of bacon frying in the kitchen, or wood burining in the fireplace; the smell of clothesline-dried sheets in the springtime. honeysuckles in bloom, and the slight musk of a female as her sexual fever begins to intensify...and the sweet twang of Magic Markers when the caps are off.

My favorite smell, There are so many to choose from. I would have to go with the smell of my lover lying next to me, (That is when I had a lover), On the beach while I watch the ocean's breeze tousles her hair.
