I'm 15 and my parent are getting on at me, saying I spend too much time on the computer. So I want to supprise them and start doing something that dosn't invole the computer. I live in the country so going out is really quite difficult beacuse all by frinds live all over the place, also I't bloomin freezing out side at the momment, what with winter and all. So really I need to have something indoor and not too geeky, so any idea, beacuse i'd like to start it soon.

Try coin collecting. It doesn't have to cost you a lot. You can go to the bank and pick of a box of coin (whichever denomination you like) for exactly face value. A box of pennies is $25, a box of nickels is $100, a box of dimes is $250 and boxes of quarters or half dollars are $500. You don't have to buy the whole box. The bank can pull out whatever amount you like.

Once you get a box, you can go through and pull out the better coins (there are books to help with this or websites). You can pick up a coin album and try to fill all the holes (get one for each year) or just search for interesting ones.

The coins that you don't want can be returned to the bank and put straight back into your account (though it's often better to return the coins to a different bank (not just a different branch but a different bank) so that you don't search the same coins over and over). Everything you find will have been obtained at face value. You'd be surprised what people have found. Check out these links to see:

Also check your change for interesting finds.

Some things to search for: wheat pennies, silver dimes, silver quarters, old coins, error coins, coins with the "S" mintmark - it could be a proof coin etc. There's always the chance that you could find a real treasure!

It's also helpful to buy a red book. It can help you price your coins and will answer many of the questions you may have.

OR IF THAT'S NOT FOR YOU...

Make chainmail. You can make a mandril pretty cheaply that you can attach an electric drill to. It's much faster than doing it by hand! Christmas is coming, so you can put in orders for wire, as that can get a bit pricey. Most likely though, your dad has some wire and pliers lying around so you can get started. Playing around with whatever is lying around will give you a bit of experience, so you'll know what you need to buy for making a proper project. What gauge wire you want to use, whether you need better pliers or wire cutters etc. You can make armour. It sure takes a while, but my partner has made two sets for LARP, some of the other guys have made some for SCA stuff, but really the limit is your imagination. I've seen websites for making chainmail skirts and tops, lampshades, and all sorts of other things. You should be able to find info on the different types of weave, but after that it's up to you to play around and see how each one sits and what projects it would be appropriate for. You don't really find patterns, just pictures of things and it's up to you to make it from looking at the picture.Thin wire can be used to make jewellery for your sisters, thicker wire using a weave that sits flat (like 6 in one) could be used to make place mats. Tell your parents what you are up to, because a lot of "adults only" sites will come up on a chain mail google search and you don't want to be in trouble for looking at such things when you weren't!

I think photography may suit you as the hobby ties in with your interest in computers you can get software such as photo shop which allows you to edit and improve the quality of the pictures. You live in the country I'm sure its very scenic rivers and stuff.
You would only need a digital camera to start you could even make some cash out of it at family gatherings and stuff. Good luck.

I think the Ham radio is a great idea. You could set your self up in a room and put a big map up and pin point all the places that you've contacted. That wouldn't be to geeky to your friends, especially when they hear about all the exotic places you've reached. Kinda makes the world a smaller place.

learn to play an instrument, drums or guitar or something like that. also, it depends on what your interests are.you could take up skateboarding, mountain biking, something to keep you active and get out and explore with your friends. even if its something you do once or twice a week, youl be showing your parents that you dont have to sit in front of a computer to have fun! but if you'd rather do something indoors, playing an instrument would be a better idea and that way you get to show your creative side! you could also get a small pet (hamster, mouse, gerbil, that kinda thing) to keep you occupied!

Start learning to cook. It's a great life skill and it's not geeky. There are a lot of famous male chefs. Your parents will love it.

I was going to suggest ham radio, but then I saw the "not too geeky part."

Learn to fly ultralights, gliders or full-size power planes. When it warms up, learn to fly RC planes.
