If Madeleine had been found safe and well the following day then I believe the McCanns would have been charged by the Portugese police. And rightly so. However, I think the police are either waiting to charge them with a more serious crime or possibly will charge them with neglect at a later stage. If they were to charge the McCanns with neglect right now, there would be certain infuential people and other wellmeaning folk shouting that the McCanns had suffered enough due to the loss of their daughter and I think public opinion would turn slightly in their favour. Be honest, can any parent out there tell me anything more devastating than the loss of YOUR child? Social Services have apparently visited the family, and were satisfied that the twins were in no danger. Well, let's face it, they are under the spotlight right now, it would be completely stupid to leave the twins alone. Just as it was completely stupid to leave all 3 babies alone that night.

Most excellent question I have read all night tonight! I know they should be getting more than just talked to. How about proper child care classes, supervision by social services. What about that! I mean come on for f*ucks sake any other working class family would have had the twins taken from them no one would have gave a rats @ss about how they were "already suffering" from losing their daughter. If they hadn't been so ignorant to leave their children alone in the first place to go eat then we wouldn't even be having these conversations! Who knows maybe their child is in better capable hands!

There are two important points to remember here. They are already in trouble - sort of. They have been named official suspects in the case of their missing daughter, even if that is just a legal manouvre. And of course someone has taken Madeleine. So they have to contend with all that is happening, the suspicion and their missing daughter.
The second thing is....
.......one day they will be in a court possibly answering to a charge of child neglect, even if Madeleine is found alive.

Those two morons should be charged with child abuse, child neglect and anything else that can be thrown at them.
I would not even go next door and leave one child in an unlocked apartment. These cretins left three children in one, none of them capable of doing anything for themselves, and ate and drank out of sight and earshot of them - apparently on a regular basis.
It is irresponsibility at its most sickening and poor Maddie is the victim of their lunacy.
Everyone hopes that she is safe and well and that there is a happy ending to this appalling lack of parental care.

I do think that something should come from this but a the minute they have bigger fish to fry by finding Maddie.
I bet that once this has started to settle the Media will then point this out more and something will be done.
I think nothing has been done yet because the police think they have something to do with it and they want to be able to put as many charges on them as possible when it comes to the court hearings.
Justice will provail but just not right now.

Lori M its not difficult.Your right. This could have been any child, and if this had happened while all the family was tucked up in bed, there would be no retaliation.Crimes like this have happened in secure premises with everyone home, but they werent were they. The only decent thing about not locking the door was in case of fire, but going out took presedence,no window dressings,no frills, pork chop and vino came first

I wondered the same thing. I feel bad for them and the child. Those are awful circumstances for anyone, drinker or not, to have to endure. They made a dreadful mistake and unfortunatly they and the child will pay for it forever. Hopefully, other's will learn something from the situation.

Thats exactly what I have been asking from day one! It is totally wrong to leave babies alone, anything could have happened (and possibly did) - I have no sympathy for the McCann's they have only their selves to blame for whatever happened to poor Madeleine. They should be prosecuted, no doubt about it.

lorelei that incident happen 2 miles from where i live in newcastle and not sunderland so your knowledge of that case just like maddies is lacking and the man who snatched her had followed her for weeks before hand that was not an opportunist crime he followed her around and new every move her family made plus that little girl is still alive so the comparison your using is not very strong.
second i agree with the question they have not been charged for that which i think is wrong.
