All mothers want their children to love them, so when a split happens between mom and dad, if she is insecure will tell lies to make herself look better, so the children will stay with her. So many do not understand that if the ex is really scum, he will prove that to the kids, and they won't want anything to do with him. But it is a shame because two people don't get along that the kids are torn because of it.

I guess it depends on the woman. All women want their children to love them, some lie to protect their children, some lie to their children to get revenge on their ex.
e.g. My mother never told me why my father broke up with her ,while i was growing up. It's only when I was 21 my aunt told me how they broke up and mom confirmed it. She said that she didn't want to turn me against my father.
My sister on the other hand bad mouths her ex to her children. Her big son now hates his father.

Men do this as well and it is called parental alienation. They do this to alienate the other parent so the child will choose who's the better parent. This is terribly wrong and as the child grows and learns things as they are own their owin,it can have devastating results. The child figures this out in time and usually ends up hating the guilty parent.
So sorry if anyone feels I am biased by my comment in which I am not. Parental alienation is a process and begins early on in the molding of a childs mind and often way before custody issues arise. Women and men are both guilty of this attrocity.

I don't think it is outright malicious lies that most people tell their children. Sure there are bad apples, and there always will be, but I think that for the most part, the truth is more complicated.
I think that women are going to tell her children their side of the conflict. In all conflicts there are grey areas where two people are in perpetual dispute, and both people think they are right. What you may call lies she may call the politically incorrect truth. On the other hand, if the man were to tell his side of the story, the women would be the one calling him out on his lies, and he would be calling it the politically incorrect truth. Each side is going to tell everyone, including their children, their own interpretation of the grey areas of an argument. That's just human nature. In bitter breakups such as divorces, there is so much emotion and so much jockeying to be right that the truth sometimes does not readily manifest itself.

Parental Alienation comes from a parent alienating the other parent who does not have custody of the child.
With mothers having custody of the children over 80% and more of the time, it goes without saying that parental alienation generaly performed by mothers. Nice try to put it on men but your bias is a STANDOUT.
You put men and parental alienation within the same short sentence. If you did not mean what the short sentence represents, then I reverse my sentence that says that you may be bias.

They have various reasons I guess; some are to get revenge for all the pain and sorrow, well, most are that, never ever realizing the damage they are doing.

They don't just lie to their children, they lie to everyone. It's backwards rationalizing that he must have been a bad person all along because she feels that way about him now. In many cases this can become complete fantasy. It happens more often in women because of the emotional component.

SOME women do, and it's for all sorts of reasons...revenge, hatred, selfishness...all of them bad.
And men DO do it, too. I've see it happen.

Dude, my ex was telling lies BEFORE we divorced... in fact, having stumbled upon some of the lies (not just to kids, but friends & family too) were part of the reason we split - she was pissed that I'd caught her red-handed and asked her to put the full story to those she'd lied to.
