Move data files not frequently used to another location, such as putting your music, pictures, and videos on CD or DVD will usually be the most effective way to free up space. Most people have more space used by data then by programs.
Uninstall any programs you can live without. Use the Control Panel, and the Add/Remove Programs icon to see a listing of all the installed programs. If there are any that you cn live without, rarely use, or duplicate each others abilities, then uninstall what you can.
Consider using the "file compression" to reduce the space used by files that your computer rarely uses. It does do a good job of freeing space on the hard drive. The "danger" is that if after a compression, you run the hard drive space too low, Windows will not be able to uncompress files, and you could crash the system. So if you compress, you have to be sure to leave 10% (or 1 gig minimum) of the drive empty at all times.
After doing a major disk clean up, always be sure that you defrag the hard drive. While a defrag does not normally free up disk space (in fact it may actually decrease your disk space by a tiny amount), it rearranges the files into an order that will permit your computer to run much faster and reduce the possibility of corrupted files and system crashes.
Finally, consider the most effective method of all of freeing disk space. Consider investing in a USB hard drive to inrease the amount of space you have. Move your data and documents to the USB drive, free up the space on the original drive, and be all set for several months of worry-free, space available computering.
