You can choose your top 3 & then select 1 out of your top 3.So these are the names -
*Jawaharlal Nehru
*Gulzarilal Nanda ( acting PM)
*Lal Bahadur Shastri
*Indira Gandhi
*Morarji Desai
*Choudhary Charan Singh
*Rajiv Gandhi
*Vishwanath Pratap Singh
*Chandra Shekhar
*P. V. Narasimha Rao
*Atal Behari Vajpayee
*H. D. Deve Gowda
*Inder Kumar Gujral
*Manmohan Singh
My top 3 are -
Jawahar Lal Nehru
Indira Gandhi
Rajiv Gandhi
Out of these three i would seclect Late Rajiv Gandhi as the best Prime Minister ever. Unfortunately we haven't seen much of his because of his death but he was one person with a very clear 'VISION' about India. He was a forward looking person & because he was well educated,he could make good decisions.
I think India has missed a great prime Minister.
I am sure things would have been differnet if he wasn't killed by those terrorists.
So, Rajiv Gandhi is my all time best Indian Prime Minister.
I would like to know your thoughts on that.
Cheers!!!

Mr.Karikalan - I think we need to separate Manmohan Sir from this list.
He is a shining star & should not be compared with politicians.
Personally,i have a lot of respect for Doctor Manmohan Singh.
Cheers !!!

Lal Bahadur Shastri provided true leadership to India during the Indo-Pak conflict in 1965. In the same year, when the Chinese accused India of having set up an arms factory on Chinese soil and consequently threatened to attack India, Shastriji replied that India was prepared to meet any aggression from China.
Earlier, as Union Minister of Railways and Transport, Shastriji tendered his resignation in the wake of a tragic train accident at Ariyalur in Tamil Nadu which killed 144 people, for which he owned moral and constitutional responsibility. He set an example in constitutional propriety, which has been rarely repeated except to enhance political opportunism.
His slogan, "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan" gave a decisive push to the Green Revolution in India.
Simple, honest, unassuming and a true patriot, there is no Prime Minister as great as Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Nehru, Indira and Rajiv took their Prime Ministership more as a hereditary job rather than a people's mandate.
Although Nehru did laid the base of India's industrialisation, he was too compromising on occasions and failed to lead India successfully during the Sino-Indian conflict.
Indira Gandhi, while highly successful on the international front vis-a-vis Pakistan and the USA and also in agricultural, space and nuclear self sufficiency, subverted Indian bureaucracy and judiciary during emergency.
Rajiv Gandhi had a grand vision which got muddled in the mire of corruption.
Morarji Desai was India's answer to Indira's authoritarianism. But he proved to incapable of leading the government as the Prime Minister, thus belying the hopes of the people.
A.B. Vajpayee could have been more decisive in some issues, especially regarding India's relations with Pakistan and the Indian response during the Kargil war. Vajpayee did give India some respectability on the nuclear front though.
The rest of the list including Dr. Manmohan Singh will at best find their places in the footnotes of Indian history for being too inconsequential.

Morarji Desai. During his period sugar was affordable to all in Rs. 3/ - per kg & rationing was removed from that. During his period it was felt for the first time in reality that minority communities were not considered by establishments as traitors & agents of foreign countries. real secularism was visible during that period only. After his departure, that vanished again, practically.
