Do you think the reason there has been such a negative backlash towards the Mccans is because they are middle class and doctors and seemingly respected in their local community.
Forget whether they did it or not but socially are we more likely to want to believe the mighty middle class can have the same criminal and social problems the working class does.
Discuss - Dont bother asking if your going to rant!

first 3 answerers havent really understood my question, I obv didnt explain clear enough.
My point is are people v quick to jump on the bandwagon that the mccans killed Madeleine because they are well off, educated, well respected. Is it cos people are jealous - not of loosing a daughter but of their life before.
the public always likes to see people is respected places fall (celebs royalty, politicians) is this the same thing, do people want the Mccans - doctors - to be murderes

I agree with you that there is something of a class-war going on and the tabloid (gutter) press (staffed by middle-class ponces) is exploiting this to the hilt. They like to appear a bit rough and champion the side of the under-classes and so see the McCanns as a soft spot to attack and sell more copies. Daily they have invented more and more lurid stories and never world retract inaccurate ones. The people who buy these rags are of course taken in by all this. The working class have always been told they are guilty of all the worst vices, such as child neglect and abuse. So when they see a case of purported neglect, they jump at it like pit-bull at a rag-doll. They are trying to flog it for all it's worth to show that, if they are bad, the middle class is just as bad as they are, or at least not better.

I feel the negative backlash has come from people who honestly do not understand the actions from the McCanns on the day of her disappearance and the response from the McCanns since her disappearance. A recent poll shows that 80% of the public feel the McCanns had something to do with her vanishing. These people taking the poll are from all walks of life, from a higher class,to middle class peers of the McCanns to the people considered in a lower class. So no I don't think it stems from jealousy due to class or anything else.

No, it's not jealousy of the McCann's lifestyle that makes this such a controversial issue. It's the fact that the McCanns are 2 intelligent, educated, people holding down responsible jobs in the community. Doctors are responsible on a day to day basis for making life or death decisions, their job is to CARE for their patients and to look after their wellbeing. I think people just find it amazing that their judgement was so flawed that they couldn't even be bothered to look after or care for their own children, preferring to put their own enjoyment over the safety of 3 babies.

I dont think it would be jealousy as too why they have got such negative backlash i think its down to the fact that as doctors how could they be so careless and leave 3 kids all alone to go drinking when they had the money even to bring an au pair or hire a babysitter at the complex.I think they have been treated well considering what they done and if it was a normal working class family would we have been given the treatment ( i dont think so)

Whether they did or didn't do it i dont think the negatitvity towards them is down to jealousy. A lot of things just don't seem to add up so i think a lot of the backlash is people seeing that - i feel for them losing a daughter but it still smells funny to me!

And yes, everyone wants to see the higher social classes fall flat and show they make the same mistakes as us :)

No, I feel sorry for them, ( God Help Them Both ) how could they go out and leave their 3 children alone in their holiday apartment while they went out drinking at the local Tapas bar?
There is negative backlash towards the McCanns for leaving their children alone, it's about child neglect and nothing else, not BOOBS, BEING MIDDLE CLASS, MONEY, SIZE O, DOCTORS etc etc, just CHILD NEGLECT.

You only see whats on here. There has always been a fundamental problem and hangover from the Victorian days and it shows here.Go to australia for a holiday, thats where your headmaster or surgeon is called Harry,Corky,or Liz,we or at least i dont want a class system, or any other, race, country, religion, and the sooner thats all dropped, the easier it will be to treat all individuals with the same level of justice.Air is free, where you choose to breath it should not affect anyone, unless you want there air as well

Guffy Laugh - yeah ! I'm Jealous of the McCanns just because of the whole shame these duos bring to the doctors/physicians & GP community in the UK by being self-defiant of their weirdest and shameful act one can ever imagine behind the disappearance of their lovely daughter Maddy.
Of course then going and hiring a publisict paying £100K really proves that they know how to play the game ! If someone is not jealous, they must be hallucinating !

I agree with Dave i think that the fact they are "middle class" has actually saved them from a lot worse personal bashing from the British press. If a couple from a council estate had left there kids on there own they would of been vilified in certain tabloid publications. Whereas the McCans were originally given very positive press.

i hear what your saying....and its an interesting point that i havnt seen brought up on here before....but from my point view (and has been said in a couple of answers), no, i dont feel jealousy is the main factor of the negative backlash directed at them....it is literally the circustances involved....leaving 3 small children unattended....it beggars belief.....that alone has won them very few supporters, and the ongoing media circus....PR men, SPIN...there arnt words normally associated with missing children cases...and obviously being named as offical suspects....refusing to answer 40 questions....the events of the night not adding up....i could go on and on....i'm neither pro nor anti....but i think these are some of the many reasons for the hostility towards them, not jealousy.
