They come from the posterior of a toad (Derr!) and if that isn't a good enough reason not to eat them then I don't know what is!

Well I wouldn't eat them if toads have been sitting on them.
The terms "mushrooms" and "toadstools" go back centuries, and were never precisely defined, nor was there consensus on application. The term "toadstool" was often but not exclusively, applied to poisonous mushrooms or to those that have the classic umbrella-like cap-and-stem form.
