"Homophobia" could possibly be considered a mental illness if it involves unreasonable fear of gay people and avoidance behavior not merely dislike or hatred of them. The popular term "homophobia" usually applies to people who strongly dislike homosexuals. It's more akin to bigotry such as racism or anti-semitism rather than a phobic disorder. A true phobia involves unreasonable and excessive fear of something. If it's a true phobia it could be classified as a "Specific Phobia, Other Type" under the DSM-IV criteria. http://anxiety.psy.ohio-state.edu/phobia-d.htm

homophobia, should be treated as the word indicates..... as a phobia!..... Science has nothing to do with this. more mental health.
But not many people are going to seek counselling for this phobia as it doesn't normally cause debilitating life problems.... i.e i lock myself away as i fear seeing gay people in public places and have a panic attack, n pass out if one crosses in front of me....

No, being disgusted by sexual habits you consider impure is not a mental illness. Its just discernment.

homophobia is a term that was created by the gay community and its supporters....
to describe those that dont accept the gay lifestyle.

Nothing more than their society trying to fight back and attack those that belief gay behavior is a distorted learned behavior.

Nothing more than an attack on non-gays.

As far as an illness....only a GAY person would try to use that type of reverse psychology. In denal of your own learned behavior as a distortion, but lets point the blame and attack others when we have the problem.

Homophobia does not exist. It's a made up term to justify predigest towards others.

Phobia is an irrational fear of something. No one has an irrational fear of gays, they just disapprove of their lifestyle. Not the same thing.
