I find it hard for some teachers to say I don't know.

I agree. But as a teacher I find that students find it difrficult to accept that teachers dont know everything and almost relish the prospect of teachers having to say so. Sometimes (in the middle of the night) I imagine some of those studfents having to stand up in front of their peers and admit that they know absolutely nothing about anything!

I don't really find it hard but, I can understand in the case of a teacher. I guess they always have the fear that, his or her class will lose whatever respect they have for them. Also the insecurity that they're worth as a teacher has gone down ever so slightly if, they can't answer a student's question. It's not that all teachers are overly paranoid and insecure but, this might be coming into play on a subconscious level. Also some very brilliant people who pride themselves on their smarts, may have a hard time saying "I don't know" because of the insecurity that they're less valuable, if they fail even once at the thing that they're good at "knowing things". Not all that different from some teachers.

If it is a teacher you mean, yup it is hard to a teacher especially the student to grasp the reality that their teacher donot know the answer to the question at hand.

No it is not easy to say " I donot know the answer" if it is a teacher or the school subject is concern, but if it just an ordinary question and answer portion in one's life then I donot see why not just say " I donot know the answer" being so honest to the question and not making matter a little bit complicated.

If I do not know the answer to a question, I will say as much - and then do whatever I can to find the answer.

In this way I help myself by helping another person: I learn something I did not previously know.

Nobody knows everything. To not admit to not knowing something, especially when you are the "teacher", is plain arrogance.

Well, teachers are pressured to know everything. But still there are too many stuff in this world to know everything. I have some teachers who say they don't know but they just give their opinions by saying "as far as I'm concerned/know"...though they seldom say it.

Well, I'm not a hypocrite therefore, I really say "I don't know" coz I really don't. I'm only human, only a fool will expect perfection from a human being.

It is better to say: I don't know the answer at the moment but I will make a research on that.
And you have to research on the answer to educate your knowledge on that question. With that you help the person asking that question and also yourself: an additional information.
