AMD does not sell cheap processors ALONE anymore. Intel core duo e2140, e2160, e2180 all based on conroe architecture but lesser L2 cache (1MB). They cost $74 to $84. When they are run on their nominal speeds, they more or less match the AMD X2s. Overclock them, they are beasts!! They match the Core 2Duo 6xxx series in most aspects.

Insane overclockability to the point the a low end model (E2160 $89 specifically) overclocked can beat the top of the line AMD Athlon X2 6400+ without even increasing the voltage.
The only thing AMD has over intel is cheaper more full featured motherboards for a lower price as the memory controller is in their CPUs and not the motherboard as is with Intel.
Intel Core 2s are faster in gaming and in applications than the aging Athlon.
