Great q, Zim!
It boggles my mind to think that that alcohol is one of the greatest killers, breaks up families, soo addictive etc. yet its 100% legal ! Not just that, but theres 'pressure' to be a drinker. Whats the first thing someone is offered when they go to a restaurant, or even a braai? And as someone who isnt a big drinker, i sometimes get strange looks because im not drinking anything alcoholic...
The only thing banning drugs does is to put money in the hands of gangsters and syndicates. Thats what happened during Prohibition in the States. The only things those ppl care about is $$$, they dont care if their products are made to any sort of standard, much less pharmaceutical stds.
Govt are guilty of double standards. Why is it all right for me to get leglessly drunk, but i cant enjoy a joint in my own home?
Just like there are those that can hold their drink and others that cant, there are ppl who wont turn into giggly morons after a joint or two.
Im not advocating for ppl to run and out get recklessly high, ppl should practise RESPONSIBLE drug use. If you cant afford it, dont do it! If you are looking after children, dont do it! If you think you are addicted, get help!
You're right, users are getting ripped off, even worse, because of this hysteria around drugs. It reminds me of this Abstinence vs Condom debate. Sure, its good to abstain, but
to deny ppl condoms is sticking your head in the sand to the fact that ppl are doing it. And if you do that, how can you come to grips with a pandemic?
Its the lesser of 2 evils, and the govts have been picking the greater for the past 100 somethin years...
If im a responsible adult, then it IS my body...

Well, I don't know if I can cheer you up, but the answer is that you are the government. Government is nothing more than the will of all the people for the common good - at least in a democracy it is. If you are voting responsibly, staying informed and doing your best to give civic input when possible or necessary, you are perpetuating good government. Yes, we pay a ton of taxes. I've been through your experience twice in the last couple of years and I can't say it made me very happy either. But in the end, if we want a prosperous nation, with good infrastructure, sound military and homeland security, disaster preparedness, low crime rates, no one homeless or without healthcare and education for our kids and care for our elderly, taxes are necessary. The utility rates are another story. Those folks are just greedy. I'm ready to try solar and geothermal. It may cost a lot, but at least my family won't be so vunerable to the whims of the moguls at the power company.

And of course they permit every killer to carry a knife ? A small difference in the degree of independence on the drug and on tobacco smoking. And a small difference in the price of drugs and that of tobacco. When a smoker "only" negatively affects all those around him, including his own children (even their unborn children), a drug addict DESTROYs his family, steals and kills for money to buy his expensive drug, ruins his brain and falls deeper and deeper in his cycle until he dies. But, by that time he has also wrecked the lives of his family and most likely got a few more fellow humans hooked onto his drug. Sadly, because so many politicians smoke and drink, and the fact that the tobacco companies pump a lot of money into the countries where they operate, tobacco consumption is seen in a different light. It is indeed difficult to decide where to draw the line, even with alcohol. Was it not Jesus who turned water into wine, thus condoning human consumption of alcohol ?

I beats me broer. I agree that the governments all over the world like to take the easy route. Just like they do with tobacco smoking, they can licence the use of all recreational drugs; put a lot of tax on them; and educate people about their dangers. In his essay, Liberty, JS Mill says; “The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilised community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not sufficient warrant”. Need I say more?

Hi Zim $, Its all about money and power baby! Its illegal so the value is higher, who do you think is behind global production and shipment ? It ain't father Christmas its the corporations and men who pull the strings of our governments. Money talks, and mega, mega, zillions can do what it wants.
They make the money that feeds the peoples habits well. The nearest we've ever got to a full scale admittance of this was when the CIA would fly charlie up from LAC to USA.

I don't do drugs. I don't smoke. I occasionally drink alcohol. You've got all round good points, except that I would like the governments to ban tobacco and alcohol too.

there was another question a while ago about who do we "belong" to. I think the conclusion was that all people belong to their countries governing body... So I guess that the government can then decide what is good or bad for you... Wonder when they are going to start realising crime is bad for us too....

Because it isn't your body. Your mother gave birth to you, she gave you life. Does she agree with what you are doing to her, to you, to your family?
Youa re aprt of a family and it is heartbreaking to watch it being destroyed by the selfishness of some of its members. Unfortunately, I know this only too well.
If you lived on an island, if you belonged to no one and no one belonged to you, if no one was influenced byor cared about your behaviour, if no one loved you. Then you could do what you want.
But as it is, you are loved. Your body will fall apart, needlessly, and someone will have to pick up the pieces. Either your family or the State.
And if you didn't use drugs, you wouldn't be ripped off. Sorry, you are being naive and stupid.

Not to be mean, but it is for your safety and the safety of others. Isn't the world dangerous enough without the extra? Besides, your body needs nutrients to live and thrive--not illegal drugs. If you want to kill yourself for a high, then so be it. But if you ask me, there's much more to live for. You miss it when you're high.
