China is no longer a true communist country, today. Communist does not allow individual ownership of anything, except your soul. But today, Chinese citizen are now allowed to own property. They were even condemmed by Vietnam and Cuba as Traitor to the communist ideology. More and more, China is now in a transistion to either socialistic or capitalistic (democratic) ideas, only the future will tell where they would lean to. They found out that communism is a
bankrupt ideology.

No, nor are they totalitarian or a dictatorship.

While it is true they are controlled by one party, in recent years and especially this year, non party members are encouraged to be involved with government and run for high office.

Totalitarian, something that China is often branded with is not even close. That form of government controls all aspects of life. In China, one can own a home, seek whatever employment or profession they want. Free to travel, immigrate and migrate to another part of China. Free to buy whatever they want, consume what they want and free to make what they want within the law. In short, pretty much be like most Americans.

Dictatorship, again wrong. That form of government is controlled by one person or a few people. That is simply not the case. Two points, read above about inclusion by non party members, plus their president and many others are voted in by their legislature which is voted into power by the people at the province level.

China is also a very capitalistic country with a free market system. The is the opposite of communism.

The CIA web site says that China is a communist state. That is impossible because of the above and I suspect they are still declared that for two reasons. #1 the ruling party is the Communist Party which it is in name only, even Henry Kissinger, the cold warriors warrior says that. #2 Communism is regarded as a dirty word. It keeps up the China hate. Not even China refers to itself as a communist state.

I think the best thing that China could do is drop the name Communist from the party name.

Keep in mind, N Korea has the word democratic in their name. We can safely assume N Korea is not democratic.

Finally, China is slowly morphing from a totalitarian state to a federal republic, much like what we have, at their own pace. Not the pace the instant gratifiers in the west want. China is very smart to understand that instant change has unseen consequences and that is is better to make the changes slow.

What most people know of China would fit in a thimble, what most people THINK they know would fit in a barrel.

China is little of what many think she is and much of what you want her to be.

Signed, an ex pat from the USA living in the heart of China, who, like many, believed all the China crap till I saw first hand that most of it is indeed crap.

Peace

Jim

Essentially Yes,but they are changing a lot. Much of that is an illusion however, while they may bring on a lot of reform it is still very tightly controlled, and is done solely because it benefits the government. Any reforms they have implemented were primarily done to expand their economy,to bring in the cash necessary to prop up the communist regime. They will allow their people to have the illusion that their country is reforming, and that everyone can prosper,as long as in the long run the govt has the final say. That's why even now in China anytime you see a reporter interviewing workers, what you also see are the "handlers" nearby, whose sole purpose is to step in should the workers have the audacity to in any way criticize any govt policy. It is still a very tightly controlled environment, and all things must in the long run serve the state. As long as everyone toes the party line they will be allowed to prosper,if they step out of line they will be reminded very harshly who is still in charge.

A quote from Wikipedia:

"These countries are generally known as "Communist states" in the West, because their ruling parties typically use the name "Communist Party of [country]." However, the countries themselves are referred to as socialist republics, not communist, in their own constitutions.

They are defined by a form of government in which the state operates under a one-party system and declares allegiance to the ideology of Marxism-Leninism.

In accordance with Marxism-Leninism, the constitutions of these countries claim that all power belongs to the working class, that a democratic dictatorship of the proletariat has been implemented within their borders, and that they are building socialism, with the goal of achieving communism one day."

Very. There is a lot of news about them cracking down on capitalist tendencies and transgressions.

I think their biggest problem is that a country of 1 billion people is difficult to control.
