No dobut Joe Torre is probably one of the best coaches in baseball. But I think he has no class for calling a $5 million dollar per year salary plus $3 million more based on performance an "insult." How much money do people need these days to be satisfied with things? Who cares if it's a pay cut for him. Does he need to buy a bigger mansion or something or is he planning of donating his raise to the redcross? There's people that would love to manage the Yankees for free if they had the oportunity. I've totally lost respect for him. Am I the only one?

Well no matter what job you have, the last thing you want to do is take another job that pays less than what you were being paid before.
Secondly, the incentive pay is insulting because it suggests that he wasn't doing enough already. Which I think is a bit ridiculous when you look at what the Yanks have done recently.
Another aspect is that is was for only one year, from a managerial perspective that provides little incentive because you do not know if you will be with the club the next year. Also your job is on the line and though managers are ultimatley responsible for performance, with as many free agents as they probably going to lose this year it is not a good situation for someone to have a one year deal.
Lets also not forget that George pretty much told Joe that if he loses this series he won't be coming back (this taking place in the middle of a series). Who would want to work for a boss like that? Torre is to great of a manager to have someone like George in his back pocket all the time or looking over his shoulder.
When it is all said and done I don't really think Torre rejected the contract because of the money. It goes way beyond that.

He said it wasn't the money . I personally believe it was the insult combined with other factors. If you took a cut in pay after such good service how would you feel about it . He doesn't need the money no doubt that's why he could easily afford to refuse a new contract.
