Do not confuse system RAM on the motherboard with graphics memory. They need not be the same. So if your motherboard has ddr2 RAM it can use graphics card with either ddr2 or ddr3. Get ddr3, it is FASTER.
Good options= ATI HD2600XT or Geforce 8600GTS
Awesome= ATI HD2900XT or Geforce 8800 series

Depends on your budget and you computer as a slower processor will bottleneck mid-high end cards and less than 1gb will slow anything down (2gbs recommended for mid to high)
