I doubt we'll have a draft. I can't see people putting up with young women being drafted, and I see no way that it could just be men who got drafted.

The US, at this point, will definately not attack Iran. That whole region right now is so unstable that at any given point the campaign in Iraq could begin to crumble. This is a very fagile moment for those efforts there at this time. The politcal atmosphere in the US is to pull out of the Middle East. Any act to the contrary would be devestating for whatever party made such a decission. Such an act would pull is into a World War which is not a situation that anyone who has a say in such a decission........ wants. A draft in and of itself is out of the question simply because of the atmosphere yet again in the US. If you think public opinion about the present war is bad imagine reinstituting the draft? At this point, where we are now, unless Iran were to become outwardly aggressive towards us there is no way we would be officially crossing the Iranian boarder. Hope that helped.

If congress allowed the Pres to go into Iran, which I'm very doubtful they would, the Russians already told Bush the Kurdistan area is a hands off proposition, the oil rich fields.
A war of this caliber would require the Iranians to ask Russia for aid, maybe even Chevez. The Chinese would stand down as neutral I think.
I don't know how Russia would hold up, there army didn't make it in Afghanistan, they had more desertions then they had enlistments. They were down to one meal a day for their troops and, asked the families to send food to help support the troops there. I don't think they ever pulled themselves out of that hole but, I think they would still be formidable.
I was there for the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban crisis. I was also there at the Brandenburg gate, Charlie one. And the coal for Berlin crisis. The Russians make big noises but, stand down every time we face them down.
If a world war broke out in the east, we would all be, in some way or the other, become involved so, there may be no draft but, we'd still be involved in this mess in some way.

I would think not. If the USA attacked Iran, the mission would be highly defined ... destroy Iran's nuclear capability and get out. It's likely that an American boot would never touch Iranian soil. USA is not interested in an occupation or regime change in Iran. Let the Iranian people deal with that.
Iran is treading on very thin ice with their stated "peaceful nuclear aims". Only a complete idiot believes that. The Iranian regime wants a nuclear weapon and very well might use it against Israel.
A more likely scenario would be Israel destroying Iran's nuclear capability with America's approval and logistical support.

It is possible that this would escalate into a world war as I cannot see Russia standing by and then the EU would be nervous about their friends in the Near East like Turkey and the Arabian states. At which point China might intervene as it has clients in Africa and the southern ex-Soviet Asian states and then Japan would feel threatened and obliged to muck in, etc etc.
But modern warfare is highly technical so giant divisions of hastily trained "squaddies" are not much use to anyone.

No. But, if China or Russia attacked the USA, a draft would definitely be certain.

With our military stretched as thin as it is and the structure in which it is presented in, if we decide to mingle with another antagonistic nation, we could instate the draft unless there is some sort of propaganda campaign or incentive otherwise.

God help us!!!
There will also be a worldwide financial depression, worse than the 1930's.
Why attack anyone??? If there is a draft, hopefully everyone will refuse & then there will be no war.

if we did attack, yes it is quite likely but its very highly probable that we will because we cannot afford another iraq, now if the iraq war ends then it will be a different story.
