"i was only too surprised that yout country let you have acess in the first place."
I amnot a native english speaker,so i can't get it,what exactly does "first place" mean in the sentence???
Or what exactly does the sentence mean?

The words ' in the first place ' means ..before anything else...or int first consideration. The speaker says, I was only too surprised that your country let you have access before considering anything else.

It means... that despite something negative that you have done to your country you have been granted access and some more. Being granted the access makes the speaker too surprised that the other things granted to you will make no difference on the amount of surprise he already felt.

To me the sentence means all wrongs/mistakes came afterwards were related to have given you access which was the first wrong(mistake) done.

first place is just an expression, basically it is a starting point in their argument.
