Having just made ham sandwiches for my husband - I wondered if I would have so happy if I had to kill the pork that died for it.

Could you kill a pork for a sandwich?

No I could never kill a pork but I could happily harpoon a trool.
Trool sandwich is yummy. You have to bash it a bit because its all hard and stringy but with lashings of tomato sauce, its quite nice. Quite satisfying really to fill your stomach with trool.

No way!!! I would become a vegetarian without a doubt because I am almost one right now! I hardly eat meat, but the meat I eat is just chicken and turkey. I don't know, I'm not used to pork anymore so the taste is very strong for me right now. I imagine not a lot of people wouldn't kill the pork, it cannot be an easy task!

Being raised in the hills of Southern Oregon, we killed everything we ate.

Beeves, pigs, chickens, lambs, goat, rabbits, and several small forest animals.

We also collected eggs from our own chickens, milk from our own cows, and grew most of our vegetables.

There is nothing mysterious about a ham sandwich or a glass of milk. Omnivores eat everything up and down the food chain. A hamburger means a dead animal, ham is a dead animal, chicken is a dead animal.

Doesn't bother me a bit.....I know where it comes from and how it's processed from the cradle to the grave and through the butchering process.

Killing of animals for consumption is done is a very humane manner to make sure that it is over and done with as quickly as possible. There are several methods used, which I won't bother to list here, but each of them involves the quick and fatal rupturing of the brain stem. And since the brain stem is in charge of all the functions your body needs to stay alive, like breathing air, digesting food, and circulating blood the death is quick.

I have killed hundreds of animals in my study to become a veterinary nurse. You can not perform an autopsy on a live animal. A few of them were pigs. In one memorable day between a class of 8 students and 2 instructors, we learned how to slaughter and prepare one pig, 2 dozen ducks, and 10 dozen chickens. Each one of them needing to be autopsied before the meat was passed on for processing.

So to answer your question...yes of course I would be able to kill the pig that results in my bacon and ham.

Edit...the only other type of pork I know of is called "long pork" for obvious reasons. If this is what you are referring to, then my answer would have to be NO. Many times no. I would rather starve!

When I was a very young child, we had a small chicken farm and my dad used to kill a chicken for Sunday dinner. I will never forget as long as I live the sight of him chopping off the head and the chicken running around the yard chasing me with no head! Then the chicken was dipped in a pail of boiling water and hung up to be plucked. I will never forget that smell! When it comes to food, ignorance is bliss. I couldn't kill anything and then eat it, even fish.

I have done that before in the past and I could do it again. I have a hard time doing it as I don't like to kill animals, but that is food. At least when you kill and process it, you know how clean the meat is and how fresh it is. It has been a few years since I have done that.

Yes, I'm sure I could. I'm glad I don't have to, though. Still, killing a pig for the meat myself, or even using a butcher, is probably better than some of the mega-hog farms where so much meat comes from now.

A pig is killed in the most horrible manner. I t is either stabbed or beaten to death. Animals have life and feelings like us. Pigs are considered as the most intelligent creatures. I will not even allow anyone to kill an animal on my behalf. I would rather starve to death than eat an animal for survival.

To be honest, no. I would not have the heart to do that. But I would eat the meat product as my body is still developing and needs the nutrients. Maybe I will go vege when I am older.

No I couldn't - I would become vegetarian if I was faced with this dilemma. I could only kill an animal to eat if it was to survive - and even then I'd weigh up the pros and cons about not knowing how to prepare the meat!
