I am lonely, I live in a single, and I really miss having a pet around. Technically, we're not supposed to have anything but fish or turtles. But a lot of people get away with other things. What kind of animal could I have that would be friendly, perhaps help cheer me up some? And wouldn't make a lot of noise or smell really bad?

I would say a dog, but you would have to train it not to bark at night and all, I think fishes would be too messy, I have owned fishes before, turtles are no fun, they do nothing, but sit there and, well do nothing, so good luck with that. Hope you find a good cute pet. Ooh wait a cat, it is perfect, a cat would not make noise and it is clean, you can train it to ppop in the box and all.

Would you please, please, pretty please check this idiot out!!!

Caged reptiles are good then.. but if you aren't a fan of lizards or snakes then you could even try maybe a mouse or two. Take ideas from other people's pets that they get away with, it all depends on what kind of pets you like. Cats may also work as they require a litter box, don't make much sound and keep quite, but you would need to take it or let it outside often.

good luck :)

A hamster or a mouse... get a female mouse though, the male ones stink!!!

...When I was in college, me & my roommate found a skinny, fleabitten kitten outside. We snuck her into our room. We kept her for 3 months until we had fattened her up & found a new home for her... We had to clean the litter box like 10 times a day to keep the smell down!!! Luckily our R.A. never found out. The other girls in the dorm knew, but never told because they always came by and saw the cat when they were homesick. Eventually another girl in our building took the cat home with her one weekend.

I think you should settle for fish or a turtle if you're going to live in the dorm. Just because other people "get away" with breaking the rules, that doesn't mean you have to do the same thing. Besides that, you don't want to get busted.

At my grad residence at UCLA there was a pet iguana that got on the loose; big too. I think I would stick to small fresh water tropical fish in a 10 gallon aquarium.

We used to have a rabbit in our house. When they make droppings, they're typically hard pellets so they don't make a lot of smell or mess.

Other possibilities include a Shetland Pony (lots of interesting and potentially illegal things you could do with a pony, some that you might even make money doing!), an elephant or a whale. Excuse me, I'm going crazy this morning.

A parakeet would be perfect. However, you would have to find the right one. I have a male who whistles constantly and tries to mimic everything he hears. But my female, Tiki, is very quiet and only whistles when her food dish is empty or I whistle at her. She's very content watching the cooking channel or HGTV when I'm not at home and she doesn't make a sound at night. She sits on my shoulder while I'm getting ready, reading or just watching t.v. She loves attention and plays with her toys as if she were a puppy. She very assuming to watch and loves to explore new things. A hamster would be interesting and quiet. Good luck finding the right pet for you.

Honestly a cat would be a good pet. They are quiet, you don't have to take them on a walk, they clean themselves and all you have to do is change the little box once a week. You can hide it anywhere and the cat will know where to go to use the bathroom.

Gerbils are fun.. you can get all sorts of habitates for them to run in and they never have to come out of the cage.. you do have to change the saw dust or shredded paper in the cage, but that should not be to big a deal.. they are fun to watch and are good company..
