We have the most beutiful country in the world and we do nothing to respect that!Is there a movement to replant the forests?
Is there an environmental organization in Greece with some real muscle to get things done or do we accept the fact that we are a nation focused on '' simferon'' with apathy for our devastated countryside? How can your average interested individual make a difference?

A couple of months ago I would have said 'no'. I always considered Greeks some of the most ungrateful people in the world. I am Greek and I hate to admit that we are destroying one of the most beautiful countries in the world. However, since the devastating fires this summer I have noticed a huge shift in public awareness in regards to environmental causes.

It is sad to think they needed a major ecological disaster to wake up but if it means they will start respecting their ecology - so be it. I think it comes to awareness and education. The more we push, the more they will notice and hopefully the more they will change!

The Ecumenical Patriarch is known as the Green Bishop.
So yes I believe that the Greek people in general have a great respect for the environment. On the other hand just as in any country, Greece does have a problem here and there.

Unfortunately the new rich mentality dominqting in Greece, and also the lack of consciousness to the animals and the environment have driven Greece in this situation today.
The licences given to anyone in exchange of a tip,and the mentality of''you know who i am'' is dated since years in our country, add the laws and all the politicians who fight for the chair_see fires in summer)and the mentality of the villas and celebrities which is much more diffused here than in any other country...

Generally, I would say no, there isn't one. There are some pioneering spirits it seems but if one is to observe the litter, garbage, rubbish and filth that people mindlessly toss around defiling marvelous landscape and seascape, one comes to the conclusion that there is neither education nor consciousness about the environment, let alone the unfetterd profiteering from the fires.

let me ask you one thing. if there was any such consciousness would we, the greek ppl, have voted again for the same government? sure, the rise of the smaller parties are partly due to the fires. such things need a vast effort to bring results and i haven't seen anyone idealistic enough.
personally i am trying to recycle and use organic stuff and i don't eat junk food. at lest it's a start.

Everywhere, in every country, we need to change public opinion. They are not burning the state's forests, they are burning OUR forests. They are polluting OUR waters and air.

Talking about things to make people aware is a first step to raise public awareness. I have met quotes from my answers in YA in other media. Word gets around.

it was a effort to built a seroius ecological party in late 80s but it came to nothing...I fear that we are going to wait for a serious ecological consciousness to emerge and perhaps then it would be too little too late!
