I have been trying to find out if I can increase the signal for a wireless signal when I am staying in a hotel? I do not want to plug in cards, but if there is a USB type device that can be plugged in to increase the signal strength that would be great. Thanks for your help.

I work for Hilton, most hotels (including mine) do not have enough access points to accommodate the number of guests logging in (when installed not that many people used wireless). The systems are almost outdated, We are working to remedy the problem at my property by updating our system. You could ask the front desk at check-in for a room closer to an access point (they know where they are) and away from a corner and Elevator.

If you're getting a connection you should be thankful for that (and there is unlikely to be any point in increasing the signal strength further since you probably won't be able to max it out anyway).

Trying a different wireless device might work (although the antennae in the screen of laptops tends to be better than what PC Cards have).

Though in reality they're unlikely to do all that much unless you get a higher gain antenna (which would require you to point it at the access point and would also require that you able to plug it into your computer which you probably won't be able to do).

Moving the computer around might get a few extra dB.

You can buy a Linksys Wireless USB Adapter. It's best
