I live in Los Angeles County and would love to stay close to my family after the recent loss of my mom. I am a junior level transfer student and was graced with admittance to both UC campuses at Irvine and at Davis for Winter(I start in 2 months).
I took the answer one Yahoo member provided me with (thank you!) and went to visit the campus at Davis. I have visited Irvine, but did not go on a campus tour and left with a bad vibe.

My major is definitely History...but I will probably double or triple major/minor in Political Science or International Relations or Italian or English.

I felt that UC Davis put on a better show than Irvine, but then again, I spent my visit at Irvine in the counseling office, trying to figure out my school situation and didn't see much of the campus.
I have to decide by the 31st.

Dining at UCI looks awful
Davis has no lights
I like the beach
I like people a lot
I like being busy
Parties are OK
I love being involved w/ school
I adapt easily
Irvine is safe

Well I think you should go to UCD.

It really depends on what you are looking for in a school and the area. I say visit both schools before making the decision. UC Irvine is good because it is near LA and you can probably get more work in theater there than in Davis. But then again UC Davis is near San Francisco but not as close as UCI to L.A. In my opinion I'd say UCI.

The best thing I can tell you is to rank in order the most important to least important factors that you provided at the end of your question. Then next to that column, write the name of the college that will suit that particular factor. Try to select the school that will meet your most important needs.

From your list I would approach it like this;

Dining at Irvine is awful but the campus is safe. I could learn to adapt to eating conditions by purchasing my own food and/or picking from the best that Irvine has to offer.

Davis has no lights, so I question their commitment to student safety (I need to compare the dining facilities and the recreational options before making a decision)

I like being involved with schools so I need to investigate the extra-cirricular schedules of each school.

That's how I would do it. And another thing, the fact that you like the beach, people, and being busy plus the fact that you adapt easily should serve you in such a way so as to make this process less stressful on you.

I think you will be fine no matter what you choose, but I think the most commendable thing is your attention to and value of your personal safety.

Good luck.

First of all, I'm very sorry about the loss of your mother, and congratulations on getting into both schools.

I can appreciate your desire to stay near your family right now, but I think your instincts are good. UCI is a good school, but not a terribly warm, friendly school, and everyone I've ever met who went to UC Davis (including my sister and several other relatives) loved it.

UCI is probably a better place to go.
UCD is in a remote place.

UCDavis is the better of the two campuses.
