Leo Tolstoy's life as a Christian anarchist, centered on two main things, his love of God and his non-violence. In the Death of Ivan Ilych, it is easy enough to find which acts, exemplifies his love of God, but the non-violence part is taking me a lot of work.

The story is about what is valuable in life. I never thought there was a 'non-violence' message there.
Rather, it is an examination of what is wrong with people's attitudes and, by extension, the world's attitudes.

If there is violence, it would be the character's inner condemnation of himself: more symbolic than physical.

There are instances of psychological violence when his daughter leaves for a party and how his lawyer friends react to his death. the doctor with the floating kidney episode presents a good moral about non-violence.

Did you read the book?

Ivan never overtly hurts anyone, his family does no physical harm to him, but the story of his life and death is overcome by sheer banality--how his wife spent so much time decorating, etc.
