If you stay in the US, there is no question that Spanish will be the best language to take. We have a large Spanish-speaking population here, and interpreters are in great demand. They can be used in court, in hospitals and clinics, and in almost any business or government department, even in your daily life.
If you move to Quebec, Canada, then definitely take French. Did you know that there are more French-speaking people in Quebec than in France! Also, if you would like to travel to France, then French is the language for you.
If you want to travel to any Spanish-speaking country, and there are many, many of those, you will appreciate being able to speak to local residents as you travel. Of course, you could take both and have a lot of fun with it. Many universities will have programs you can major in, and if you contact their departments of language, they can tell you of many jobs that their graduates have. Owning a travel agency, and leading travel tours is one that would be a lot of fun.

(-: Believe it or not, I used my high school Spanish at my job today. I taught the kiddies how to say "Hola!" to the very cute race car drivers that visited the school today. So you never know when it will be useful.
Both languages are useful, and if you can, you should take four years of them. To decide which one is best for you, go to the library and get a "beginning to speak" French and Spanish book with CD. Give each language a test drive, and see which one is easier to pronounce and remember.
Personally, I think Spanish is a lot easier, but French, because it is harder, might look better. And if you move to Canada, it'd be good to have a basic knowlege of French, since it is officially a bilingual nation.

If you live in the US Spanish would be the most useful since so many here speak Spanish and some do not know English very well. It probably would be helpful in many jobs.
There are parts of Canada where French is spoken and therefore if you were in Canada French would be the preferred language.

I know a bit of Spanish and recently heard a few different people speakin Italian in front of me (it was being translated to English for me) and while there were some similarities, there were a LOT of diffrences, I basically couldn' understad a word of it even though I knew that there were words that sounded like Spanish words (although that could have been the ranslation rather than the language itself). I think it is easier to pick one up if you know the other but I think you would do well with an Italian phrasebook

Definitely Spanish. It's pretty much our second language in the US and it's easy to learn. A little over 25 years ago I was where you are now and ended up taking both.
I took four years of both languages and learned to read, write and speak Spanish, but only to read and write, but not speak French.
I live in a rural area, but have used my Spanish many times over the years. In fact, I have spoke Spanish on the phone at least 4 times in the last 6 months.
I would advise you that Spanish will serve you well in whatever you do. It would also be a good idea to find out what the teacher for both languages is like.
A good teacher will slowly teach you words, then how to conjugate them, then how to read, write and speak them. All in that order.
There are other ways to learn, but going to fast and missing important steps will hurt you in the long run.

Spanish in the US (especially in California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, etc.)
French in Canada (especially in Quebec and other French-speaking regions...)

Spanish is better because it is very useful and you can use it a lot but French is hard to use unless to travel to Europe.
