One can argue that every war that has ever been fought centered around religion. Religion has long been used to divide individuals to show difference instead of similarities. I agree with previous posters that religion is more of an excuse that is used rather than the root cause. Power, Land, and control of resources is the true root of every war...I disagree with you on several accounts. First, you are assuming that religion and god are one and the same when that is not so. Religion refers to an institution and atheism (deny existance of god) is also a religion. Second, I disagree that the point of religion is freedom of choice. Society has always been religious (dating back to early civilization) and it has been imposed. Think about how much of an impact religion has on society today and consider that we have become significantly less religious over the years. I believe the point of religion is to give people commonality and a code to live by and hope for the future...I just recently read a great book about what life would have been like had religion never existed.

As a few have noted already...it is not religion, but power.
God may give choice, but that is corrupted by confidence in ones self, greed, pride, jealousy, etc.
It is the manipulated mind that controls the masses with fear. I can not blame a God for the weak hearts of a sensitive human. Sometimes the heart of a man is in the wrong place, usually control by something that is not God...
I hear very few stories about a loving and just God. Reality and history seems to contradict this. It is the decision of a warrior to go into battle. It is their life.. A soldier is not fighting for the politics, but for their lives ..
this should be in the religion and spirituality section

Religion is NOT about freedom of choice. Religion is about belief, and each religion has a doctrine of beliefs. Some claim it was given them by God. Others don't. Some don't even believe in God. You should understand that religion is an institution run by men, or women, which defines and unites people of like mind. Their beliefs are their opinions, and they're willing to fight for them.

Religious dogmatic views become the voice of the masses and any opposing religions are seen to be wrong because they arent worshipping the same gods and have different customs and holy laws. Its complicated to understand but those who believe in god think theres is the one true god and that these people who are in a different religion should convert to their belief system too.

Jesus said to a woman from Samaria many years ago:"You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.
But the hour is coming and now is, when true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such to serve Him."
You either believe that the Lord God and His son Jesus are telling the truth and obey
God's commandments (of not worshipping any others gods, loving your neighbour etc)
or you have no hope and follow man-made gods of wood and stone that God has condemned.
Freewill has its responsibilities.
May God bless all who truly seek Him.

We fight because of the Land.. not religion..
Three major religions, Christianity, Islam and Jewish, started in only ONE city. Jerusalem. People want to control that place.

Too many religious leaders believe their religion is the only religion and have passed this belief onto their followers. These followers mistakenly believe that those who do not accept their religion will not get into heaven.
God is non-denominational, I wish we were.

people use Religion as an excuse - but l think if any of the organized religions were any good, the message they give would not be able to be used as an excuse for evil.

Because everyone thinks their way is the only right way and they feel the need to impose their thoughts, feelings and beliefs on the rest of the world!
