I just recently was approved in June for a Sec. 8 voucher. I moved into a small apt. complex the same mo. When I spoke to the mgr. one day she told me that my bf could only stay for 2 wks. at a time otherwise he would have to be added to the lease. But in the same conversation she told me that there were others living here that could get kicked off sec. 8 if housing found out that they had unauthorized persons living with them. I cannot add him to my lease due to the fact that a couple of years ago he got into a little trouble. He works full time and we are hardly at home. A couple of days ago the manager tells me that "i need to get rid of him," because he's been around too much. I recently found out that another Sec. 8 tenant living here has her 19 yr old son and a boyfriend living with her who are not allowed to be there but the manager told her that it was ok. I also found out that they are heavy weed smokers. Is it fair for her to target me and what can I do?

He is not living with me he just comes to stay for a couple of days at a time because he wants to see his children. Like I said she is allowing other tenants to scam Sec. 8 by letting unauthorized people live with them. I am not letting him stay with me because I don't want to jeopardize my children's home.

You should try to stick to the rules. Really, anyone else's situation doesn't apply. You should never try to judge fairness by what you can see of someone else's household. Even if you are correct, it does not change what you need to do to keep yourself safe and legal. That's life, on or off welfare.

You cannot add him to your lease because Section 8 will not allow it.

Also, due to his criminal record, the landlord would probably not approve him as a tenant.

You need to do the right thing and not have him live there. If Section 8 finds out you can lose your voucher.

If you do not do it on your own, the manager can begin the notification and eviction process due to breach of lease. Section 8 will be notified, which in turn will put your voucher at risk.

Worry about yourself.

Do not talk to section 8..you could really mess things up for you and the other tenant. Do what the manager says of you will risk getting kicked out and loose your benefits. Besides, your friend has a criminal record...what makes you think the landlord wants someone with that kind of history living there?

I am a landlord in NJ who has had sect.8 tenants.
If they find out about your boyfriend who sounds like the father of your children, you could be in BIG trouble.
They can find out how much he earns a month and deduct that amount from your voucher.
Sect.8 is for people of modest means, most like yourself have children. IT IS NOT A FLOP HOUSE FOR EX-CONS!!!!
The taxpayers are paying your bills, not you!!!
There has to be some accountability here.
You are only interested in what is most convenient for yourself, you should be thinking about keeping a roof over your children(s) heads. You should keep quite and do as you are told by the manager.Or you will become a trouble maker looking for a place to live w/no housing voucher.

YOU were given section 8, NOT your boyfriend. If you get caught scamming section 8 you will get thrown off the program, and possibly have to pay back some of it, since you moved in other people.

If he is living there then his income also must be considered in your availability of Sec 8 and or welfare. Could be someone reported you and he was notified.
