Stop by, be friendly and polite and see what happens. If you're concerned, call animal control. It is good to follow up, you are being responsible, and she said you could. It is a good idea to make sure she isn't a "hoarder", there are a surprising number of people who take any free pet they can find, even though they can't really care for them. It's not out of cruelty, many of them love animals, it's cause by mental illness. Eventually the situation becomes neglectful then abusive. As other people mentioned, it's also a good idea to make sure she's not using them for any other reason. And that she still has the cat, if she doesn't, call animal control immediately. Beyond that, there's not much you can do. In the future, if you find yourself in the difficult situation of having to surrender a pet, do it through a rescue or shelter, or at least do a home visit first and make them sign some sort of agreement stating that they will return the cat to you if they can't keep it etc ... This helps weed out the bad eggs.

yes, you know i would. when i was getting high i've spent 5 weeks in a mental institution before (the foods not that bad) but i would definitely come visit you. hell, i'd probably do something nuts just to get put in there with you! then we could sneak off to the shower with nobody knowing...
