Continuous spectra are generated by black-body incandescence. The curve follows Planck's law. Line spectra are generated by ionized gases. Bright-line spectra when the gas is glowing against a dark background, dark line spectra when black-body radiation passes through the gas. Mercury is use to generated the UV radiation in fluorescent tubes.
