Any universities that are old fashioned looking like Yale, but public, or at least more affordable and a little easier to get into. Any that you know of

William and Mary (Virginia) is pretty 'old school' and they're a public.

They're the second oldest college in the US right behind Harvard and before Yale.

The other colonial college that is a public u. is Rutgers in New Jersey. All of the other colonials are privates (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, UPenn, Columbia, Brown, and Dartmouth).

If you live in the South, many of the state schools were built in the 1800s (obviously not as old as Yale) and have the "old feel" to them.

Research. If you really like Yale's look, shoot for it. Apply and see what happens.

Even the way people speak is the cause of animosity in Britain at the moment. Those of us that speak correctly are often mocked on television, in the press and even in some districts in person. Those of us educated at public schools are often misrepresented as being privileged and being given opportunity on a plate. What is always forgotten is that hard work is what generally makes these people stand out. In the U.K. the medical profession has a very high proportion of public school men in it as does higher education neither of which offer high rates of pay. As one of your other answers states (although in slightly flippant terms) it is a bitter and corrosive form of inverted snobbery born out of jealousy that has become prevalent in Britain since Mr Tony Blair (himself a public school boy - Fettes College) took power in 1997.
