The amount of emotions either group have are equal. However, there are certain differences in how they are expressed and used. That much, I think most of us can agree on. For the rest of my answer I am going to make broad generalizations that some of you may hate.
For the most part, women tend to use their "emotions," which are based off of unconsciously noticed details for a lot of their decision making. When something "feels right" they do it. When something "feels wrong" they believe something is wrong, and they seek to logically work out the problem. This allows them to get through life without really thinking about many day to day issues that arise. Peaceful situations are handled with no problem, and when an argument arises, they can have a calming voice of reason... sometimes anyway.
Men on the other hand tend to use logic for most day to day actions. It allows them to justify what they are doing as right to anyone who asks, and if there is some question, a correct answer can be reached without hurting anyone's feelings. However, men, like everyone else, has emotions, and if logical arguments seem to be failing, they will fall back on their "instinct" and go with what feels right.
This unfortunately leads to the problem you are mentioning. When a man gets emotional, it means that his normal means of handling the world are not working. In essence he has been backed into a corner, and could do anything. This is why when a man has his emotional moment it is taken seriously. The more emotional he is, the more things are not working for him, and the more dangerous he may become.
Women on the other hand tend to get logical in a stressful situation, so when a woman say "Guys, guys, we need to think this through..." people start to take her seriously... or back off and give her room before she does something dangerous.
Unequal? I suppose so. Untrue? quite possibly, but that's the stereotype you've got a problem with, and now that you know what it is, you can use it to your own advantage, or work to change it.

Women are labled the more emotional ones because women show it more than men do. But that doesn't mean women are necessarily more emotional than men. Men were brought up not to cry, just be a man. That's why men are more willing to resolve an issue by fighting versus women who prefer to talk things out (for the most part), so I guess that is also why it seems more serious to see a man cry than a women.

Taken more seriously? I doubt it. Most people (male or female) don't give a cr@p when a man shows emotion but make a big fuss when a woman starts crying. Or worse, they call the man gay or mentally ill just for being human.
Why can't it be equal? Why can't men get as much sympathy? I don't understand either.
Good question.

It is not equal. We are very different. I understand that there are individual difference, but women can cry anytime their feelings are hurt in any situation. It is accepted socially and they are rasied that way. Heck, women cry even when they are happy.
When men cry, it is becuase the pain is all the way to the soul. Usually because they are wounded very deeply and it usually is serious.
It is not the same and never will be. Men and women are not equal. They each have strengths in different areas. Women are much more emotionally stronger than men..

I agree with you. This really divides the genders and makes women have all the freedom to express feelings.
It's okay with me for a man to cry. (I did last week)

Men are just as emotional as women. What do you think aggression, anger, and sexual jealousy are? That's right, they're emotions. I get sick and tired of hearing about how men are so unemotional but the truth is that they show anger far more readily than women. That's because it's more acceptable for men to be angry than cry. And yes, men do get angry over trival or stupid things.

Women do cry more often than men. Women also have fewer heart attacks and commit fewer violent crimes. Expressing emotions in appropriate ways is not a bad thing.
