It is perfectly OK for you to spend your money at the fair and pay your fine at a later date. In my library system the fine will simply remain on your record until you pay it off. You may receive 1 automated phone call but that's it. No collection agencies, or guilt. $40.00 is an awful lot for one item so I can only assume it was for more. If your library system doesn't come after its patrons, just pay it when you are ready to check items out again. I've worked at a library for over 14 yrs. and deal with this daily.

How about taking some personal responsibility for the fines and not blame the library. All they do is offer free books, tapes, and services to the community and you have the nerve to blame them for your lack of responsibility and maturity. Talk to the librarian, tell her that you are having trouble paying the fine and if the library can help. I bet that they will reduce the fine. Support your local library - they are an important part of the community. And shame on some of you that are proud of not having walked into a library in many years. You don't know what you are missing and you are showing your ignorance.

My oldest son checked out a "Simpsons" comic book & since he's has the same name as me, only junior, I'm banned until the fines are paid....one of the many bad things about the computer age!!! I argued but those library ladies say "Until you pay the fines, You are banned from the library in St Paul, Minnesota"!!!! My Library card has spider webs now!

I should have a wing at the library by now. No matter how well-intentioned I am, I can never seem to get a book back on time. Ask me about my video store late fees. It's not a pretty sight.

I don't have any. I love the library, so I turn what I borrow in on time. That way I don't have any fines... Go pay your fines, then you can go back. It's not their fault that you were late!

The most I've ever had to pay in fines was $5. But my sister had to pay something like $50 once.

ha, once my sister (well acually it was me, using her card) took out some books and didnt bring them back for monthes! Wen i finally got them back,i had a 40 $ fee!!! It was ages b4 i payed that off! Needless to say i was avoiding the library a lot. hehe. cuz I was broke and knew my parents would be pissed if i told them. Eventually i had to though. suprisingly they gave me the money with no lecture or punishment..odd.

$0. And if you turn your books in ON TIME, or call to RENEW them before they are late, you can enjoy a $0 fine total, too!
Be a considerate person and turn your books in on time so others can enjoy them - and stop blaming the library staff, it's your fault you have a fine, not theirs. (PS - pay off your fines and you can use the library again)
