it's rather arrogant or more don't you think that for example, boston is playing chicago for the world series (even though no world teams ever played) and the winner is deemed the champion of the world (best baseball team in the world) and they actually say this during celebrations as though, it's shameful and this farce should not be allowed to continue. profession basketball players worth millions of dollars each got their butt kicked by a bunch of amatuer greeks in fact came in 4th place when challenging the world. americans champion should suffice.

there aren't that many single players from around the world on these teams that let's say represent their own countries respectfully and therefore un-named to justify it as a world league competition. the only make up you then have is american teams and not lets say, greece. and to say that no other world teams are on the same level is just oblivious. look what happen to the NBA ballers being the self proclaimed worlds elite during the past 2 olympics as they simply got balled with their big headed egos by a bunch of the so called "not on our level" world teams . they were just plain college boys. so the same fate would await the self proclaimed "worlds best" without truly earning it so called major league. so belittle me all you want, moan and groan you can even blast away other countries with your nukes, but without the true test, you are still only american baseball league champions. an no its not jealousy, its the spirit of true competition.

The rest of the world kicks a round ball back and forth across a field for an hour so and try to score goals by kicking the ball into a net. The players aren't allowed to touch the ball, only kick it. Typically one or two goals get scored during the hour that they play. In the US, this game that the world plays is called soccer and it is almost as boring as NASCAR.

The players that play major league baseball come from all over North America, South America, Central America, and Parts of Asia and even Australia. Baseball is played in all of those nations and that is why they call it the World Series.

Do you understand this, or am I being obtuse.

The title of this championship "World Series" may be confusing to some readers from countries where baseball is not a major sport (or even where it is), because the "World" Series is confined to the champions of two baseball leagues that currently operate only in the United States and Canada.

The explanation is that when the term "World's Championship Series" was first used in the 1880s, baseball at a highly-skilled level was almost exclusively confined to North America, especially the United States. Thus it was understood that the winner of the major league championship was the best baseball team in the world. The title of this event was soon shortened to "World's Series" and later to "World Series".

The United States continued to be the only professional baseball country until some decades into the 20th Century. The first Japanese professional baseball efforts began in 1920. The current Japanese leagues date from the late 1940s. Various Latin American leagues also formed around that time.

By the 1990s, baseball was played at a highly skilled level in many countries, resulting in a strong international flavor to the Series, as many of the best players from the Pacific Rim, Latin America, the Caribbean, and elsewhere now play on Major League rosters. The notable exception is Cuban nationals, due to the political situation between the USA and Cuba (despite that barrier, over the years a number of Cuba's finest ballplayers have defected to the United States to play in the American professional leagues). Players from the Japanese Leagues also have a more difficult time coming to the Major Leagues because they must first play 10 years in Japan before becoming free agents. Reaching the high-income Major Leagues tends to be the goal of many of the best players around the world.

Early in 2006, Major League Baseball conducted the inaugural World Baseball Classic, to establish a "true" world's championship in the way the term is normally used for other international sports. Teams of professional players from 16 nations participated, and Japan won the first World Baseball Classic championship. Olympic baseball was instituted as a medal sport in 1992, but in 2005 the International Olympic Committee voted to eliminate baseball, and it will be off the Olympic program in 2012.

The World Series itself retains a US-oriented atmosphere. The title of the event is often presented on television as merely a "brand name" in the same sense as the "Super Bowl", and thus the term "World Series Championship" is sometimes used. However, the origin of the term lives on, as with these words of Frank Thomas in the Chicago White Sox victory celebration in 2005: "We're world's champions, baby!" At the close of the 2006 Series, Commissioner Bud Selig pronounced the St. Louis Cardinals "champions of the world". Likewise, the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine for November 6, 2006, features Series MVP David Eckstein and is subtitled "World Champions".

A recent myth has arisen that the "World" in "World Series" came about because the New York World newspaper sponsored it. There is no evidence at all supporting that hypothesis.[3]The annual publication called the World Almanac was originally published by the New York World. Its ambiguous title and U.S.-centric content may have inspired the World Series myth, either facetiously or naively.

Mainly a term still used since the game started here in the US. Also the Major Leagues have no equal league anywhere in the world. I am very glad that the very best players from around the world dream to play in the Major Leagues. Japan has a fine Baseball tradition, and very talented players. But their leagues are really more like our Triple A leagues in the US. Many Latin countries feature fantastic players, and really good leagues. Again, the best of those leagues would compare to our Triple A leagues here. I have found Baseball is played nearly around the world to some extent. Mainly due to Major League Baseball Teams, and Players work to promote the game around the world. And especially from US Military Personnel stationed around the world playing the game, and teaching kids the game they loved as kids. I personally have played Baseball in over 30 different countries while serving my country, and playing professional baseball. There is no finer joy than teaching a kid how to hit, throw, and catch a baseball for the first time. When the term World Series was coined. It referred to the Baseball World. Which was basically just the United States. Today it is quite different, but the World watches the World Series, but they know that the Major Leagues are still the center of the Baseball World.

Wow do you even watch baseball? There are just as many players from countries such as the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Japan as there are players from America. It is called the world series because anyone in the world can play, and they do. Why would you ask this question without doing any research on the subject first, you just make yourself sound like an idiot. May god have mercy on your soul.

Go file a complaint with the International Court in The Hague already. Moaning here on Yahoo! isn't going to accomplish anything.

Neither will filing a complaint with the International Court, but at least you'll be gone from here, and that's result enough.

Go. Go now.

The world series winners are really the best team in the world. Trust me baseball players are lining up in other countries to be in MLB. Matsuzaka (sorry if I butchered the name) was supposed to be the best player from Japan and when he came to the MLB he was nowhere near as impressive.

Its not really since talent is imported from around the world.

The MLB is the premiere baseball league. Meaning for example Japanese baseball is not competitive on a whole with MLB. Not to say there is not talent there, but you see their superstars migrate to MLB not the other way around.

So in that sense it represents competition and athletes from around the world. I would see your argument if say Japanese leagues were on the same level, but they just are not.
