There are a number of decent books on the subject--most of the ones I have read are more focused on Air Force activities than the underlying causes of the war.

I'm not sure how your thesis is supposed to work. The Korean War pitted Americans against Russians and Chinese. That could be considered a proxy war, but it was also the first true post-war test of the United Nations in a peacekeeping role.

You might want to do a Google search on Mao Tse Tung and Chao En-Lai, also Syngman Rhee. These were political players in the Korean War. Also Korean General Nam Il (IL) would be an interesting search.

You might also want to look at "An American Ceasar: Douglas MacArthur" by William Manchester. Sections of it deal with the Korean War.

Good luck. By the way, for the Americans who fought in Korea, the idea it was a proxy war would be a tough sell. I'm too young to have done that, but I did manage a year in Vietnam.

"The Forgotten War" is on my to-be-read list, and it looks pretty all-encompassing.
