1. The main role of an ISP (Internet Service Provider) is to provide internet service to subscribers. An ISP has a gateway for subscribers to connect to and get access to the WWW (World Wide Web), purchasing an account from an ISP (Dial up for example) the ISP would give you local numbers to call to gain access, if you are a digital subscriber to an ISP providing broadband services you would pay for access to use their WWW gateway connecting directly through a modem box. What's the role? to provide open access to the web, for a price of course. Nowadays ISPs provide more than just web access, they provide e-mail access, some web hosting access, protection, name brand spam/spyware software and much more.

2. Search engines are your portals to infinite information on the web. Consider a search engine your road-map through millions of articles online. You can search words, questions, phrases, keywords, quotes, book titles, movie titles, names, local shops and more. The web consists of over a billion pages, you use an engine to browse through them all.

1. there is a limited number of IP address issued to the world in 3 classes a, b, and c. Private users only get class c address. A is for big business and such. The ISP is a big business and buys" a block of IP numbers for Internet use, then subnets then out to people who buy their service.

Subnetting is complex and can be done either on real numbers or proxies style with reserved IP's. So I will not go there here.

The search engine simple looks up long lists stored in the higher servers on the Internet for last reference and has the IP address of the information tagged onto the data so it knows which server to goto for the subject. It is nothing but a very fast reference library.

The answer to the question is as the first respondent indicated. But that is the grim, darker side of the tale. (Granted, here in the United States, there is a lot of materialism and the almighty dollar does seem to prevail over a lot of lofty goals, dreams, and aspirations of Justice and Truth.)

Moving on to the lighter side, a good Internet Service Provider should provide you with a relatively safe connection to the Internet for a fee. In a Microsoft Windows dominated market, a really great ISP will shield some of your computer's active ports, scan packets for malicious bits, provide spam-blocking on your POP email account(s), provide a decent home page that is useful and adaptable, and perhaps offer other services like an online (but private) calendar/alarm, and other imaginative things.

ISP's connect you to the Internet. They have Extremely high bandwidth lines directly to the Internet and allow you to pass thru them to the main network.

Search engines allow you to search cached or saved pages to find relevent information to your search terms. the more terms you enter the more specific the results.
