Personally I bought Webroot's Spysweeper, their product is great and well worth the money. Watch Best Buy ads because sometimes it goes on sale for $10 to $15.

PCTools Spyware Doctor

The Google Pack includes a free starter edition of Spyware Doctor.

I would suggest running 2 or 3 free ones if you do not want buy one..
Here is a list of some free ANTI-SPYWARE programs.
Adaware is probably the most popular.
Adaware

Microsoft Defender

AVG

Spyware Terminator 2

Spybot Search and Destroy

SuperAntispyware

There are free anti-virus scanners availble. They work well. I like AVG the best of all the free anti-virus programs.
If you are not willing to spend money it is good to have some kind of anti-virus software
avg

avast

Avira AntiVir

For a Cost
This is my recommendation for anti-virus. Free are good, but they are as not as accurate of the top paid anti-virus software
Top-Tier
Kaspersky

In my opinion, the best anti-spyware/anti-virus program is AVG. I like it because the user interface is easy to use, it does a good job cleaning up spyware and viruses and its FREE! I work at a computer repair shop and this is what we use to clean viruses and spyware off of computers. You can download it from http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-20&qt=avg&tag=srch

Avast Anti-Virus http://www.avast.com/
is free and quite possibly one of the best..
Ill also reccomend:
Hitman Pro http://www.hitmanpro.nl/hitmanpro/
Which is also free and runs multiple anti-spyware/virus programs, along with other usefull utilities.

I found "Bitdefender" the best anti-virus yet. on a year subscription yuo get regular updates, almost real time, not quite. But very good at blocking incoming viruses.
www.bitdefender.com
The best spyware I found is "Spyware Doctor", it has real time updates and is constantly monitoring your system for adware etc.

Go with one of the top 10 and give the freebies a wide birth. If your budget is tight check out eBay. Kaspersky is the bench mark, but Nortons 2007 is fine (nothing older).

This question is asked numerous times daily.
imho
The best one is the one that you use.
The one that is from a reliable vendor.
The one that you have properly configured and is automatically updating.
The one that you understand how to use so that when presented with an alert you will choose the correct and appropriate action.
Good Luck
