Lugging is another term. Inexperienced drivers that drive a standard like it was an automatic. Slip it into the highest gear(4th or 5th)as soon as possible and drive slowly in that gear, or climb hills in that gear, or pull a load in that gear, without shifting down.
Get a manual(book) on the car and read about shifting....when you are suppose to shift. Turn off the stereo, have the car in neutral and rev the engine up and down and listen to the motor. That is the noise you hear subconciously when you drive. Find a hill and drive up it in first and second gear. Then go back down and try climbing that hill in 3rd and 4th. The engine/car makes and feels different. It "shudders" and you can feel that shudder thru your backside. Not good for the motor. Not suppose to do that. You will blow out the bottom end of the engine(wreck it). Better for it to whine a bit than rumble. Besides that, you are close to stalling the motor.
This feeling/indication was most noticeable in the old VW Beetles. Driving in lower gears 1 & 2 and 3 was the norm depending on the steepness of the hill. You WANT to hear the motor. You are driving it right. All standard shifts are like that be they cars or semi's.

RE:
What exactly is "bogging" on a car? And what causes it?

It's also called lugging, and it refers to running a gear ratio that is too low for the speed, load, and available engine power, usually on an uphill grade.

It can be solved by downshifting, hauling less weight, or choosing a more gradual climb.
