I only had my girlie Evie (best kitty EVER) for six years before I found her in my neighbors bushes. I am still sad over this. It only happened a year ago, though. I think it's more about a heart to heart bonding than the attatchment.

Are you an artist? I'm like that too, I cry almost every night over something that happened years ago. Everyone always says it's because I'm an artist and don't react to things the same as everyone else. Maybe it's the same for you. But if you had your dog for that long, I'd say anyone with a heart would still cry about it sometimes.

I am so sorry to hear about your tragedy. It is normal to still be upset about losing your loved one. Dogs are like apart of the family. At least my dog is. He is my baby and sometimes I cry now just thinking about someday I will lose him, and I just love him so much. So I can imagine that if I went through what you did I know for sure I would still be mourning as you are. I think I would get a puppy to help with the loss. I know it will never replace him, but I think it will help!

I lost my cat Bobby over a year ago and I still get very sad thinking about him. He was 16 years old when he died. I think when you have them that long you become even more attached. Remember animals leave footprints on our hearts. Just keep the good memories in your mind and try not to dwell on the bad ones. Also, getting a new pet might help. It doesn't replace the one you lost but it helps you to heal.

Of course it still hurts! Animals are nicer than most humans. You're allowed to grieve, it's perfectly natural. I had my dog for 16 years before she passed, and she died about 4 years ago, and I still think of her. Just try to remember all the fun times you had together, and remember him as a happy doggy. It'll get easier, but don't rush it. Take your time.

it must be normal to feel that way because so many of us do. our pet family holds such a special place in our hearts. i know i have a special bond with mine and i still grieve for the ones i lost 40 yrs ago. i often start crying when i think of them. its just the way it is. the last dog i lost was my little lucky, a little mixed terrier i got from the pound. she lived to be 18. lets face it, death sucks.

I feel so bad about that. It's hard to get over. I lost one 3 years ago this month....a German Shepherd (not the avatar). I have his picture to the right of my monitor. You'll always have the love and memories in your heart. Always have room for another in your heart :)

when you had a dog for 13 years and he dies it's almost like losing a family member
It's still ok to grieve after a year once in awhile
However if this gets to be a day to day thing and is affecting your daily routine, you should ask your Dr. about it

because dogs are our special connection, and that's what we do. I can relate - i lost a great dog about 4 years ago , and i'm over the crying stage , but i get sad about the loss...STILL. My "Crissy" (black lab / Border Collie) died under unusual circumstances...at 4 years of age.
