Doesn't matter that you live in small-town Kentucky. You can find musicians anywhere and experience is what you want more than anything else. You may have to start by playing music you don't like to get your chops. Many young drummers get experience by playing with older musicians and stuff they don't even listen to or like. But, you got to start somewhere. We all get our knowledge by learning from older people, playing music is the same. Even though I'm a rock 'n roll guitar player, I got so much experience from playing in country bands....and it always paid at least $50.00 a night! If you keep an open mind to music, you will find that by the time you reach my age....you will be able to play different kinds of music and that may keep you in demand. Even old guys like me (I'm 54) still play in bands....now it's my turn to give back!

So, you're a drummer, eh? Then I suggest you look into finding and viewing / listening to the works of Buddy Rich--the drummer Rush's Neal Peart was wowed over. And I'd also find video/audio material on Peart as well.

It's disheartening you seek the alternative rock sound; those guys are phonies who APPEAR to be individuals---but are conformist as they come. Drummers from one alt band are the same as any other of the same genre.....wake up, dude!!

Say what you will of the classic 70's rock bands--but no two were alike. They always had the sharpest studio techs mix their music on their albums. Their album artwork stands to this day as fine art.....and people REMEMBER them!! Alternative bands are good to last a week before something "new" craps out on the radio.

And with that, I suggest you also look into the albums from Led Zeppelin (Jon Bonham), The Who (Kieth Moon), Styx (Chuck Panazzo), Kansas (Phil Earhart) and Boston (Sib Hashian).

Listen to these bands and their drummers---settle for nothing less than to bring forth REAL ROCK, not that alternative crap.

When i was playing in a band, the only thing harder to find than a Good drummer was a good practice place. If you're good, word will get out and you'll find things to do.
until then you could try the one man band thing and play all of the instruments yourself, or maybe play a little metal until something more to your taste presents itself.
