They crawl/slither on the floor, have their tongue hanging out, eat dog food, play in the water, lay on the floor, beg, lick/scratch and more.
All my children and Grandchildren did at least one of the above but I have a 4 yr. old Grandchild who is particularly interesting. Was at his home visiting and we had to see their neighbor. The neighbor let their dog outside.
The Grandchild rolled on the ground, sniffed the grass and in every way pretended to be the dog. Thank goodness the dog doesn't bite!

DEAR PERSIPHONE_HELLECAT. I am not perfect, nor do I pretend to be. If you wish to correct somone's grammar, school or college is the accepted place, comments are left on the margins of students' papers. Good Luck Little Girl!
To everyone else, thank you for being so gracious. It is, after all 11:26PM.

I did my daughter thought she was a cat, she would clean her paws..rub them on her face..get in the floor with her cat and eat her food out of her own bowl..she would meow and sit like a cat..people thought she had problems but looking back now its hilarious..she went to her kindergarten interview and half way thru was done.(she was four)..and started cleaning and meowing needless to say they didnt think she was mentally mature enough to go to school that year..we sent her anyway...she just turned 12 and is an honors student in the seventh grade and marches with the high school marching band...still loves cats though...

Yes, children are interesting in this way.
My son after watching Tarzan got so into character that he would till this day at age 10 run around like Kercheck the gorilla.
He would at 4 years climb walls , roar like a lion. Any animal he would just over imitate.
But I now see his personality he's just a Great Actor and get into character and loves nature. He's an A student math & science guy.
So just Love him he may be a pet dr or the next Cesar Milan :) to have the ability to relate to animals when we humans don't understand.
Good Luck !

It's pretty fair to say that most if not all small children do this. I used to run around on all fours faster than I did on two feet, pretending to be a horse. I remember eating leaves off a bush on the side of the neighbor's building pretending to be a koala bear.

Children like to act out different things, like firemen, cowboys/girls, princesses, kings, policemen, and yes, animals. It's just a way for them to try out different behaviors. If you don't make a big deal out of it they will eventually go on to something else. I think it's kinda cute, myself, to play "pet the kitty" or "fetch, puppy" with the kids. Be happy they are not mimicking unacceptable or dangerous behaviors!

My daughter (who's now 7 1/2), always pretended she was a wild horse named Alice (Alice! lol). She graduated to then pretending that she had a wild horse named Alice; now she has her own pony (named Midnight, not Alice!), so she's finally outgrown it. To tell the truth, I kind of miss it! Kids have such great imaginations!

I remember my sister and I playing "walk the dog" when we were like 2 and 3, we would take turns being the dog, tying a jump rope around our waist and being led around by the other one ...
and doing other animal-like things ...
I think lots of little kids do that. as weird as it seems, I'd say it's actually somewhat normal ...
