Solve the formula 3x-8y=10 for y

since you have two variables and you want to try to solve for y, put y one one side and the rest on the other side,

3x - 8y= 10

3x - 3x - 8y= 10 - 3x

-8y = 10 - 3x

(-8 / -8 ) y = (10 - 3x ) / (-8)

y = (10 - 3x ) / (-8)

Answer: y = (10 - 3x ) / (-8)

Solve I x I = 5.5 in terms of x
absolute questions.

So this one is a bit tricker, but I think we can figure out.
Everything in the abs will equal to the positive of its self, except 0, zero.

x = 5.5 you plug into the function,
I 5.5 I = 5.5 check

As I mention above, what else it may work?

the negative form? lets try

I -5.5 I = 5.5 check,
so both 5.5 and -5.5 work

Answer: x =5.5 and -5.5

Solve the equation 4x - 3(x - 3) = 6

You have only one variable, x and number part, so you want to distributed the x first, then put x together and number together, then you can put x on one side and number on the other side.

4x - 3(x - 3) = 6

4x - 3x + 9 = 6 (note, since -- is +)

1x + 9 = 6

1x + 9 - 9 = 6 - 9

1x = -3

so you have x = -3

Answer: x = -3

For the first formula, you need to equations. If there are an n amount of unknowns, you need an n amount of equations. However, you can solve for y in terms of x
In this case, you want to put y all by itself on one side of the equation.

3x - 8y = 10
Subtract 3x from both sides (to maintain equality)

-8y = 10 - 3x
then divide both sides by -8

y = (10 - 3x)/ -8

#2 the | | stands for absolute value, which is just the value of inside while ignoring the sign.
So |x| = 5.5 means x can either = 5.5 or -5.5 because the sign is ignored in absolute values.

#3 Just do the same as in #1 except for get the x by itself. You can multiply in the 3, add together the terms, etc.

1.
3x - 8y = 10
3x = 8y + 10
8y = 3x - 10
y = (3x-10)/8
Cannot be simplified further, as you have no idea what x is!

2.
|x| = 5.5
The absolute value is 5.5, which means that x is 5.5 units from 0. This can be in the positive or negative direction.
So x = 5.5 or x = -5.5

3.
4x - 3(x - 3) = 6
4x - 3x + 9 = 6
x + 9 = 6
x = -3
