I'm going to be working in an area where "businesswear" is likely going to mean long skirts. However, I'm also going to be doing a lot of walking through a dirty city, so I won't be able to wear sandals or heels. Tennis shoes and Crocs seem too casual. Any ideas as to what kinds of footwear I might be able to pull off?

Clarification: Yep, sorry bout that, should've mentioned that I can't change shoes.

How about boots? Ankle boots are pretty trendy and you can probably find them at any shoe store.

If the walking through the dirty city bit is mainly the to & from work rather than the in work bit of the walking then wear different shoes for that part - whatever you feel most comfortable in. Save the good shoes for when you are at work.

Old trainers are good as in this day and age where you may at some time face an unpleasant situation (I hope it never happens but be aware that it can) where it would be safer to be able to run away quickly & trainers will serve better than any other shoes in this case.

Have a look at what those already working there are wearing. That should give a number of ideas as to what is suitable & what is not & also what is acceptable & what is not.

You haven't said whether all this walking is *while* you're doing your job, or just *on the way* there and back.

If you only have to walk through the city on your way to and from work, then you may as well change your shoes when you get there. Keep a couple of pairs of nice shoes in your locker, and walk there in trainers (you say you'll be wearing mostly long skirts, hence probably no tights; but *do* wear socks with your trainers, to keep them -- and your feet -- from smelling.)

If you will be doing your job in the dirty city streets, then a pair of side-zip boots with a 4-5cm. heel will be good -- as long as they reach several cm. higher up your leg than your skirt reaches down! Or choose a pair of loafers with chunky heels. Spend the extra and go for real leather; they'll last longer, wear better and clean easier than artificial substances.

Find a comfortable pair or two of cute flats. If you're wearing solid colored clothing, try a pair with a cute pattern, (leopard print is really cute, when it's not overdone) or if you're wearing a lot of black, try a standout color like red.
