I'm somewhat interested in them, but haven't driven one yet. I was surprised to see that, until the 2008 alpha, they didn't have a V8 option. They only came with chevy's 5 cylinder. I think it has something like 220 hp and 230 pft of torque, which isn't bad, but that small engine seems like so little for such a large vehicle. I'm driving a grand cherokee with an inline 6 right now, and it feels pretty underpowered itself, but its also considerably smaller with a similiar powered engine. I'm worried that the H3 is even worse. Wha are your opinions?

It's in the chevy category because its a GM engine. I would think someone that browses who the chevy category would know that.

Though it possesses an attractive combination of off-road capability and everyday comfort, the distinctive 2007 Hummer H3 is mainly let down by its lack of power.

Although it shares only about 15 percent of its components with the Colorado/Canyon, the H3 DOES have the same five-cylinder engine as you said. This year sees a sorely needed boost in output, with horsepower increasing by 22 to 242 hp and torque increasing by 17 pound-feet, for a total of 242 lb-ft. Still, with a weight of 4,700 pounds, the portly H3 could really use a more powerful V6 or even a V8. As it stands, the H3 is downright sluggish compared to rivals such as the Nissan Xterra, Toyota FJ Cruiser and Jeep Grand Cherokee V8. The ride is smooth and comfortable, making this tough truck ideal for active families who indulge in the occasional road trip. The vehicle's small windows, however, do make outward visibility difficult.

Good Luck

Ive driven the H3, Ford Explorer V6 and V8, and new Dodge Durango with a V6. Its a nice smooth engine but just doesn't have the low end power. Its not unsafe slow or anything like that. It also gets horrible mileage (around 14 mpg even on the highway) in my experience because you have to drive it so hard to get it to go anywhere. I bet the V8 would get the same if not better mileage in the real world. The V6 Explorer was closer to 18. Not sure about the Durango. They are better onroad than the H3 but I've never taken them offroad.

That H3 will feel slower than your Jeep. The I-5 isn't very good with the low-end torque. The numbers at the top-end aren't bad, but if you drive one, you notice the engine really has to spin up for power.

The Jeep I-6 has lower top-end numbers, but it has good low-end torque so it feels a lot more powerful.

I've never thought very highly of the H3. It's just a Chevy Colorado (a mediocre truck) with a hummer-lookalike body on it and a bigger price tag, which reflects the novelty of driving something that looks like a Hummer, not what's underneath.

You need to keep in mind that the H3 is smaller then the H2 so it handles curves less but you are probably better with your grand Cherokee with gas mileage due to the weight differences and I have driven the newer Cherokee it handles a lot better as well handling.
