There was a television anthology series called "Amazing Stories" shown on NBC in 1985. In Episode number 5, there was a feature called "The Mission". In that a guy was trapped in the belly gunner bubble, with damaged landing gear. The crew knew they had to land, and to land would kill the guy trapped. The guy in the bubble drew a picture of his airplane with cartoon landing gear, then he fell asleep. After he fell asleep the aircraft popped out cartoon landing gear and landed safely.
The director was Steven Spielburg, it starred Kevin Costner and Keifer Sutherland.

i believe you are thinking of episode 5 of the steven spielberg series "amazing stories". it is entitled "the mission", and i don't know what the name of the belly gunner is. i will leave a link to the tv.com site with a short description. i believe the series is available on dvd.

'goose in top gun was killed when he tried to eject and he hit his head on the canopy, so it can't be "Top Gun".
