This Song Is Just So Weird. And It's Killing Me. Does Any One Know What It's About? What Does It Mean?

"Top of the World" is a Patty Griffin song that was on the "Home" album and became the title of their tour supporting the album. Like other songs by Patty Griffin, it is written in the traditional style of folk music in which the singer takes the character of a person telling a story about their life.

Generally speaking, the singer in this song is someone who has had a tough life, probably a blue collar-type background. The essence of this song is that this person (and those like him) are being silenced. Their voice is not being heard. All in all, very traditional folks themes.

p.s. For some of the earlier answers, this song predates the political controversy that took place during the "Top of the World" Tour.

It's the words of one of the Dixie Chicks husbands. I found the words to the song on a web search. The words just tell how he feels about himself and his wife. After the big downfall caused by stupid people and her comment about the President. See my question, As an Anerican. Freedom of speach. It's about the Dixie Chicks.

It's about how negativity can destroy a relationship and a person. 'I think I broke the wings off the little song bird, she's never gonna fly to the top of the world, right now" How the negative person in the relationship destroyed the spirit of the once happy, fragile person. Its a person reflecting on their life and how they wish they had treated the people in their life better. It makes no direct context of parent child, husband and wife though. I hope this helps.

It's a song about regret, about not motivating yourself to get out of your rut when you can .... and not knowing why this state of wanting but at the same time not wanting was making you uneasy - that's the interpretation I have anyway.

I don't think that 'mean' is the right word here, I think 'interpret' is better when it comes to songs, poetry, books - 'mean' is too rigid.

They used country music to get to a place where they were widely recognized. Hence the top of the world. The political statement was in very poor taste. Our president is a temporary figure. Our country is forever. To slam the President on foreign soil is not as much an insult to him as it is to the United States. Then the remark about as how we really don't like country anyway, we really want to be Pop, well now doesn't that just about say it all? Turn on your country! Turn on your fans! Well I'll just see you later!

It would be nice to post the lyrics to analyze it and all, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's their feelings after they won the Grammy, after Country music audience dissed 'em and dimissed 'em for the Bush comment they made...But after everybody realized that what they said was so very true, they got the Grammy from the Top 40 audience and they probably did feel like they were on top of the world...But seeing the lyrics would help me answer this question better.

Yes, it means the political institutions in this country are becoming very hick and redneck and need to be cleansed of the soul therefore, no more animals can attack the Dixie Chicks so they are no longer easy
