Is it just me, or are the standards for music and performing higher in The Philippines than it is in the US? I'm not an expert b/c I don't live there but it seems to me that

1. music shows/contests in the philippines have fantastic singers while music shows/contests in the states have just a few great singers but mostly average ones? And the shows/contests manage to lure in an audience without being completely ridiculous or condescending to the contestants like most shows in the US?

2. they don't just hand anyone a record deal over there the way they do in the US.

Maybe I'm wrong. Like I said, I'm no expert. What do you think?

I should add that western nations have shows like American Idol, Singing Bee, So You Think You Can Dance and the Ashlee Simpson Show that all feature "okay" singers but are mostly meant to humilate the contestants. People don't tune in to see those shows because they want to see amazing singers but they want to see people embarrass themselves. I don't know any show in the Philippines that waste their time showing an audience weeks of bad auditions. AI will show you weeks of bad auditions and will even put the bad or interesting singers through just b/c they're bad or interesting. Shows like Pinoy Popstar or Pinoy Dream Academy are the complete opposite. Those shows are uplifting, the judges and hosts are never rude, the contestants are always gracious & only the most talented are showcased.

You may not be an expert, but you are 100% correct in your observations and conclusions.

Maybe somebody up there thought we should be gifted with music to let us not only cope, but be recognized all over the world for something we can be proud of. And I do not just mean Lea Salonga and stars like her, and not only the Pinoy bands and solo singers featured in the best bars and hotels in all corners of the globe. But if you happen to be in anothet country and there is singing, you as Pinoy will inevitably be asked to sing - - they all seem to think we all sing well. Rightly so?

Yes there are a lot of talented Filipinos who are not being recognized in the Philippines. I think everybody should be recognized not only those who does shows like Miss Saigon and Les Miserables;and also, not just those who already is a big name in the industry. Most of the time too, the people who are being offered a recording contract are those who have money and who knows people in the recording world. Why not be fair to everybody and give all the artists who really have talent a chance in stardom?

i overheard a statement from a musical conductor of a very respected choir here in the Philippines "almost 80% of the Filipinos can sing"

filipinos are indeed musically gifted, it must be the climate...

one group that we should be proud of is the philippine madrigal singers they won the european grandprix twice, making history... no other choir was able to win the top prize, only the philippine madrigal singers... one notable comment from those who heard them is...

they difference from the other choirs in the competition is that they sing from the heart... no other european and asian choirs can do that!

i am really proud of them
