I've always heard the trunk is supposed to point up. If one has a broken trunk, I doubt you are in serious peril. I collect hippos and I seem to be doing OK. So maybe just collecting figurines are large mammals is good luck.

I have loved elephants my whole life. The trunk should be up (if you believe that). I only learned that later in life. I have one ganesh, which is supposed to bring good fortune to the home. That is the elephant God. And yes, if the elephant is near the front door, the trunk should be facing the door. However, I had my spanish friend come over and tell me just the opposite the other day. She told me the elephant's bottom should be facing the door so, it keeps all the "crap" out of the house. There are so many different rituals when it comes to elephants. The most common is trunk up and facing front door.
Good taste on the elephants!

The trunk of the elephant is supposed to point up,so the good luck won't run out,its the same thing with horseshoes. Horseshoes, by the way,if hung over a doorway would protect you from witches. The deal about elephants bringing good luck originated in India, makes sense to me since they have so many of them.

If the ele's trunk points up then it is supposed to bring you good luck and the opposite if it points down. I have lots of elephant things too, they are my favourite animal.

My friend actually just did a presentation on this in Spanish class (Le gusta elefantes...) anyway, she told us that the trunk points up=good luck, and if it points down it **SUPPOSEDLY** brings misfortune. However, I don't know about the broken trunk. I guess it depends what direction it was facing initially.

My aunt is really fond of the elephant god, ganesha and she has loads of figurines. It is said that if you have loads of ganesha figurines there will always be trouble with your health and my aunt has quite severe asthma and suffers several asthma attacks. But thats just Indian folklore, not sure if that counts for all elephant figurines.
