If you read anything about JKR, you know that she has a "back story" on everyone and everything, even if she never puts it into a book. The fact that she has come out and told us that Dumbledore is gay, really means nothing to the books. But I think that it does say alot for the adults who read her books. Now that we know a little bit more about this character we can go back and read it again with a different eye.
She said he was in love with Grindelwald...how does this change the story for me? Did the fact that he meet him at a difficult time in his life, one where he was lonely and confused make Dumbledore less attentive to Grindelwalds bad behavior?
I don't think its about him as being a gay man, but more about the choices that he made that summer. Falling in love with someone who had such a capability for bad. And it explains why it took him so long to end Grindelwalds reign of terror.
And in the end how this relationship formed the man he became at the end of the story.

Dumbledore is gay because J. K. Rowling, in an ill-fated statement for her own attention-seeking agenda, made him gay.
What was the point is so true?
And until the book-buying public says enough already, J. K. Rowling will continue to reveal shocking tidbits of information on her characters.
The gay community should be outraged instead of being happy about Dumbledore's relevation.
Why? Because J. K. Rowling knew the books wouldn't sell as well had she put throughout the books that Dumbledore was gay. So what did she do? She kept her mouth shut until after she made millions and millions of dollars and then she outed him. What a hypocrite!

If people say that sexuality has no bearing on the story, then why make a big deal about whether he was straight or gay??? It's still in the public eye because apparently, everyone can't deal with a gay character in a book! If you now like the character less, you need to look at yourself and learn some tolerance.
People don't understand that its not uncommon for an author to create a pull profile on their characters. Some of this info never sees the light of day, but the author always knows. I doubt JK just made it up on the spot, and to me it does make sense.
We know now that he was driven by love (and the loss of that love to someone going to the dark side). I think it was an admirable choice for JK, it's a nice addition to the dimension of the character.

It is dangerous to guess at how JKR found this to be important in Dumbledore's back story, but I'll give it a whack.
Throughout the series, we know Dumbledore as a tireless and seemingly single-minded fighter against Dark Wizards (at least from Harry's perspective; we do have to rememeber that Albus is also a great teacher, an alchemist, and important theoretical Wizard--remember the tools and instruments he made himself). But how did Albus become that way?
We learn much about this in DH, with Arianna's story, Aberforth's story and the story of the friendship between Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. In reading DH, it was clear that Grndelwald seduced Dumbledore on a number of levels; intellectually, idiologically, and, by JKR's new revelation, emotionally. We don't know if that seduction was sexual as well, and I'm not sure it is important for us to know.
The revelation completes the picture for us of a man who felt betrayed, injured by one he loved, ashamed at how far he went from rational thought and behavior, how far he really was from what he thought he was.
The up shot is that we now know more completely Dumbledore's motivations for fighting Dark Wizards--his shame at his own tangential contribution to Grindelwald's career, his reluctance to fight him, and, when Voldemort rose, his determination to not to repeat his prior mistake of inaction and to fight Voldemort from the start.
So in summery, It was part of the way JKR viewed Dumbledore and understood him. I don't think it was something that would have come out voluntarily--more likely something that would have made a scholarly article 50 or 60 years from now after she was gone and literary scholar had access to her full notes (assuming she left them to be investigated).
Due to the fact that the series is being made into movies and the need to correct the screenwriters, we would have known that Dumbledore was gay either by JKR telling us, or by it coming out through the movie people, one way or another.
BTW, there is some inkling of this in DH, where Rita Skeeter talks about devoting a chapter in her book about Dumbledore to the Dumbledore/Harry relationship. This is not to say that there was anything improper--but that JKR did put out a hint.

Rowling has "jumped the shark." She is a TOTAL retard. These people should remain sexless, in so far as we don't picture them getting it on with a lover. My read on Dumbledore is that great people usually remain single, primarily because a wife and children (or significant other) tend to make them behave more conservatively, rather than search for what is right. Man, what an UNNECESSARY addition to the Potter saga. I can't wait for her new book "The Erotic Adventures of Dumbledore." And it sure does make a spin on Harry's and Dumbledore's relationship. I can't believe she did that.
And I'm sure the actor that portrays him will be happy to know this fact. I wonder if he shaves his chest. What's his favorite sexual move? And does he cruise gay taverns? Come on Ms. Rowling, tell us more. You opened the floodgates, now you get to pay the price.
In my world he's sexless. He's just a great man who is more concerned with making the world a better place than trifling with sexual relationships. In fact, his brother even said that he's rather go off on his crusades rather than take care of his family.

I have heard that she came out and said Dumbledor is gay because they movie people wanted to put something in the movies about Dumbledore likeing a woman but J.K. said no because he is gay. again it has nothing to do with the books it is just apart of her charactarization.

Some people are gay. Dumbledore was one of them. THAT is how. The fact he was gay was not even remotely important to the story, which is why the author never saw fit to include the information in her novels. Seriously, what does his being gay have to do with anything? Why are people bothered by it one way or another?

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. How does this make any sense??? I think it is sad that Rowling has to do this to keep in the public eye. I have read and loved every "Potter" book. I think they are fantastic...But this is ridiculous. There is nothing in the books that indicates this and this is in no way important to the series. I am annoyed.

She had seven books in which to explain that and yet she didn't. Now suddenly she is on the biggest stage in the world - NYC - in front of the media and she blurts this information out. Yes, she is losing it. She is a media ho. She wants the front pages. She also made a very strange remark about not waiting to see the fan fics people come up with. I imagine she enjoys these stories. She is looking forward to reading the Harry/Dumbledore stories kids write. She is a very sick woman.
