My sister is the executor of our grandparents estate. My grandmother passed back in February of this year, and we just sold her house in the beginning of August. Does it usually take two months to sort everything out with the inheritance? Every time I talk with my sister, she doesn't know anything. She says she is having a hard time getting the lawyer to call her back. She finally talked with the receptionist at his office, but didn't get a direct answer from her. Sometimes when my sister says things, she embellishes (sp?), or doesn't tell the whole truth. I've asked for the lawyer's contact info, and of course I was forgotten. My sister said she would email it to me on Friday. Never got it. She's in New Mexico, while everyone else is out of state. So it's kind of hard to know what all is going other than from her.
Has anyone gone through this? I've heard it doesn't take this long for things to be settled and divided out. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you.

There's no probate with this one. All we're waiting for, according to my sister is for the lawyer to divide everything up and document it and send the info to my sister and my sister then will disburse the checks.

Yes, sometimes it is much longer than that. The Lawyers must ensure all of the 'i's are dotted and 't's' are crossed.

Since the heirs are scattered across the United State, it will take a tad longer to resolve.

Email your sis and let her know you have yet to receive the email she promised.

Each state has its own procedures. The question is really if it takes two months to settle on a house and to divvy up the proceeds. This is certainly possible; selling a house does not necessarily mean that the deal is consummated on the same day. I'm rather surprised that the lawyer had not contacted you directly, since you are a recipient of the the will. If he hasn't, I would send a polite but very pointed certified with receipt letter to him (if you have a copy of the will, send him a xerox of the section which mentions you).

I suggest you tell your sister to document everything, keep a cool head, and there is real damage in some way, to contact the New Mexico bar association or get another lawyer and sue the first one. Impatience is not a reason in itself.

When my mother-in-law died, it took quite a while for my sister-in-law to get everything straight, and there was no house to sell; I think it was 6 or 7 months. Deb put the money into some kind of account and my husband and siblings got equal shares amounting to $5,000 annually. Interest was being earned on the money still held in the account (trust?). Deb distributed the money on an annual basis so inheritance taxes would not need to be paid (I think the limit is $10,000). We received a check between Thanksgiving and Christmas every year for 5 or 6 years and the final year we received a check of $250 that we didn't expect (from interest). Go to legal aid or consult an attorney who offers free consultations. You need a professional to answer your questions.

First of all, the court proceedings in Administration or Probate are public record. You can search the court website and search for public records. You can walk in the courthouse for the county your grandparent's property is located and find out everything which is going on including attorney's name. Probate and administration can take anywhere from 4-18 months.

In general probate can take up to a year. Any more specifics will depend on the state where probate is being handled.

I agree. Honor killings, butchering, the throwing of acid on a woman is all disgraceful, archaic, and evil. No God would sanction such habit from one guy or woman to the different or from guy to lady. I did a learn sequence on honor killings in Islamic countries, alongside with picture pictures. It actually made me ill.
